NCAA Game Summary - Virginia at North Carolina State

Final Score: Virginia 24 - NC State 29

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Donald Bowens had 11 receptions for 202 yards and pair of touchdowns as North Carolina State upset No. 21 Virginia, 29-24, at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Daniel Evans completed 26-of-46 passes for a career-high 347 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception for the Wolfpack (3-5, 1-3 ACC), who have won two straight games and also snapped a nine-game conference losing streak that dated back to the middle of last season.

"Obviously playing against those guys (Virginia), we knew we weren't going to have a whole lot of success running the ball, so we had to throw it," said Evans. "That's what we did this week. Our offensive line did a great job and I know the protection is there. I couldn't be more happy with the play of those guys up front."

Jamelle Eugene ran for 112 yards on 23 carries and Steven Hauschka was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts for N.C. State.

Jameel Sewell threw for 260 yards, completing 24-of-43 passes with two TDs and two interceptions for the Cavaliers (7-2, 4-1) before leaving the game with a right leg injury late in the fourth quarter.

"Jameel cramped up seriously everywhere, not just in one place," explained Virginia head coach Al Groh. "When the tank is that low the quick fix methods that the trainers use don't work."

Redshirt sophomore tailback Mikell Simpson also ran for 81 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the game, but Virginia had the second-longest winning streak in the nation halted at seven games, failing to set a school record.

Trailing 23-17, Virginia took its first lead of the game thanks to a seven- play drive that started at midfield and was capped by a five-yard run from Simpson less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Wolfpack countered with a 30-yard pass from Evans that landed in the outstretched arms of Bowens two steps inside the end zone with 7:37 left in the contest. The two-point conversion failed, leaving N.C. State with a 29-24 edge.

Sewell was injured on the Cavs' next series, as he was sacked on 3rd-and-11 and had to be treated on the field before limping to the sideline and watching his team punt.

Virginia got the ball back two more times, but backup QB Peter Lalich couldn't get anything going and managed to complete just 1-of-7 passes while enduring two sacks.

"N.C. State played a good game and you have to give them credit," Groh added. "We need better coaching, special teams, offense, defense, pass defense and rush defense. We just didn't do enough to win tonight."

N.C. State cornerback DaJuan Morgan picked off an errant Sewell pass three plays into the game, and the turnover paid immediate dividends for the Wolfpack. Eugene cut to the left side but picked up just two yards before Evans connected with Bowens for a 40-yard touchdown pass and the early lead.

The Cavaliers answered on their next series, using a methodical 15-play drive that ended with a 23-yard field goal by Chris Gould to cut it to 7-3.

The surprising Wolfpack extended their lead when Hauschka drilled a 29- yard field goal, then cut short a 12-play march by Virginia when Sewell tossed his second interception of the game into the waiting hands of Jeremy Gray.

Another field goal by Hauschka, this one from 42 yards out, put the Wolfpack in front 13-3 with 5:22 left in the first half, but Virginia mounted a drive from its own 30-yard line that culminated with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sewell to Simpson at 3:04.

N.C. State countered with another score on the ensuing possession, as Koyal George added a 25-yard touchdown on the first catch of his career to increase the lead to 20-10.

Sewell then led a final charge for Virginia, keying the series with 26-yard yard pass to Maurice Covington, before Cary Koch hauled in a seven-yard pass in the back of the end zone that made it to 20-17 at the break.

Hauschka split the uprights from 23 yards out with 11:08 to play in the third quarter, giving the Wolfpack a 23-17 cushion.
