Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Paul Smith threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Charles Clay with 43 seconds remaining, lifting the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 29-23 victory over the SMU Mustangs in Conference USA play at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Smith threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns on 27-of-45 tosses and he also ran for 27 yards and another score on nine carries. He was also intercepted twice. Trae Johnson hauled in 11 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricane (5-3, 3-2 C-USA), while Clay finished with five receptions for 106 yards and the one score.
Despite throwing for 192 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 44 yards on 14 carries, Justin Willis could not prevent the Mustangs' (1-7, 0-4) sixth straight defeat. Emmanuel Sanders was his main target, pulling down six balls for 57 yards and a score. Kicker Thomas Morstead had a solid game hitting 3- of-4 field goals, including two from 50 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, SMU's Willis hooked up with Columbus Givens for an 18-yard scoring strike midway through the second period.
Smith responded for the Golden Hurricane with a seven-yard run into the end zone late in the quarter.
Morstead boomed his first 50-yard kick with just over two minutes left in the second quarter, and he added a 32 yarder as the first half expired to give SMU a 13-7 lead at the break.
Sanders hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Willis on SMU's first possession of the second half.
Smith responded by connecting on two touchdown passes to put Tulsa ahead 21-20 earl in the fourth quarter. Cameron Clemons brought in a seven-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter, and Johnson added one from 30 yards out less than a minute into the final period.
Morstead gave the Mustangs a 23-21 advantage with 10 minutes left in the game after kicking a 52-yard field goal.
As the defenses tightened, it seemed as though the two point lead would hold. Smith had other ideas though, and he led the team on a nine-play, 99-yard drive that was completed with a game-winning 51-yard touchdown pass to Clay with 43 seconds left. The two-point conversion attempt was successful and the Golden Hurricane earned the 29-23 win.
Tulsa racked up 438 total yards in the game and that helped compensate for its five turnovers.
