Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Lance Smith ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Wisconsin Badgers to a 33-3 romp over the Indiana Hoosiers in Big Ten Conference play at Camp Randall Stadium.
Smith carried the ball 15 times for the Badgers (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) as the team ran the ball 55 times for 279 yards and four scores on the afternoon.
"Offensively, we needed to grind it out, move the chains and keep our defense off the field," was Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema's comment after the game. "Collectively, I think our guys did a tremendous job."
The Hoosiers (5-4, 2-3) were paced by Kellen Lewis who completed 17-of-33 for 113 yards, but he was sacked three times and picked off twice on the afternoon.
"They're a really good football team," is how Indiana head coach Bill Lynch described the day's victors. "They can control the line of scrimmage with their front four and then in passing situations they go with a three-man line and play some man coverage with safeties help over the top. It's a good defensive football team."
Wisconsin ran out to a 17-0 advantage less than a minute into the second quarter thanks to a 41-yard field goal by Taylor Mehlhaff and touchdown runs of one and six yards by P.J. Hill and Zach Brown, respectively.
Late in the first half the Hoosiers scored their only points of the contest on a 49-yard field goal by Austin Starr, making the score 17-3 at the break.
In the third it was Smith who made it into the end zone on a six-yard run, followed by a fourth-quarter 19-yard TD scamper. In between Mehlhaff's 39-yard field goal contributed to the 30-point win.
Wisconsin, which forced five turnovers on the day, rolled up 423 yards of total offense, while limiting Indiana to just 258 yards and less than 25 minutes of ball possession.
