NCAA Game Summary - Clemson at Maryland

Final Score: Clemson 30 - Maryland 17

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - James Davis and C.J. Spiller rushed for 235 yards and a touchdown as the Clemson Tigers outlasted the Maryland Terrapins, 30-17, in ACC action at Byrd Stadium.

Clemson (6-2, 3-2) rushed for 249 yards on 56 carries, as the Tigers won their second game in a row . Davis was the workhorse with 29 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown, while Spiller was the change-of-pace back taking his 17 carries for 106 yards. Quarterback Cullen Harper had an efficient day, hitting 20-of-26 throws for 179 yards and two touchdowns.

"I think we have two of the top backs in the country, and now our o-line is starting to gel and come together, so I'm not really surprised [about our running game]. We did a good job offensively. Coach [Rob] Spence was making great calls and we came together and gelled tonight," said Harper following the game.

Maryland (4-4, 1-3 ACC) could not get much done offensively, as quarterback Chris Turner threw for 217 yards on 19-of-31 passing, with an interception and no touchdowns. Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore each ran for short touchdowns, but they occurred in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Ball led the way with 53 yards on 10 carries and Lattimore added 51 yards on 16 totes, as the Terps dropped their second consecutive game.

Despite the outcome, Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen was comfortable with the way his team kept fighting. "Our kids hung in there. I told our team after the game that I was proud of the way they hung in there, and in the long run we will be better for this."

Late in the opening quarter, Obi Egekeze hit a 35-yard field goal for Maryland's only points of the first half.

Clemson's 20-point second quarter began with a Mark Buchholz 35-yard field goal just minutes into the frame.

Harper's first touchdown pass was caught by Aaron Kelly for 27 yards and that took place with just over nine minutes left in the half.

Davis plunged into the end zone from a yard out with just under two minutes to go, and Buchholz knocked through a 34-yard field goal at the end of the half to give Clemson a 20-3 lead at the break.

Buchholz's 20-yard field goal was the lone score in the third quarter as the defenses tightened up.

Harper hit Michael Palmer for a two-yard touchdown strike just under three minutes into the fourth quarter to put the Tigers up, 30-3.

Bell punched in a two-yard touchdown run and Lattimore ran one in from a yard out in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough for Maryland in the 30-17 setback.

Clemson made 27 first downs in the game and that helped it to posses the ball for over 36 minutes.
