NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Tech at Duke

Final Score: Virginia Tech 43 - Duke 14

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Sean Glennon replaced an injured Tyrod Taylor under center and threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in guiding the 12th- ranked Virginia Tech Hokies past the fellow Atlantic Coast Conference resident Duke Blue Devils, 43-14.

Taylor passed for 88 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with an ankle injury. He was replaced early in the second by Glennon, the Hokies' starting quarterback last year, who completed 16 of his 21 pass attempts.

Josh Morgan hauled in a pair of touchdown passes, and totaled 68 yards through the air for the Hokies (6-1, 3-0 ACC), who have won five in a row since losing to LSU on September 8 and became bowl eligible for a 15th straight season.

Eddie Royal made six catches for 90 yards with a touchdown, while Sam Wheeler added four receptions for 94 yards for Virginia Tech.

The win was the Hokies' seventh in a row over the Blue Devils, and Virginia Tech has won the last three meetings by a margin of 124-14. The Hokies bested Duke 36-0 last season.

Thaddeus Lewis completed 13-of-24 pass attempts for 119 yards and scored on the ground for Duke (1-6, 0-4), which lost its fourth in a row since its lone win of the season, a victory over Northwestern on September 15. Lewis also threw a late TD pass and was intercepted once.

Brandon King secured a touchdown reception and Eron Riley made three catches for 37 yards for the Blue Devils, who failed to excite the home crowd in the school's Homecoming game.

Despite good field position on their first two possessions to start the game, the Hokies led just 6-0 after a pair of field goals by Jud Dunlevy, who hit a 42-yard field goal just over five minutes into the game before splitting the uprights on a 44-yard kick with 6:48 to go in the first.

Virginia Tech then looked to have broken the game open early, as Jabari Marshall fumbled away the en suing kickoff for Duke, with the Hokies recovering at the 23. Three plays later, Taylor hit Morgan in the end zone with a 19-yard strike for a 13-0 Hokie edge.

However, Duke's offense had an answer. Lewis moved the chains with a 13-yard pass to Clifford Harris, and after later getting the Blue Devils into Hokie territory, he hit Austin Kelly for a 28-yard completion over the middle to the Virginia Tech four-yard line.

The drive nearly stalled, as Justin Boyle was stuffed on 3rd-and-1 at the goal line, but the Blue Devils kept their offense on the field and Lewis finished off the 11-play, 71-yard drive himself with a one-yard run to make it a 13-7 game late in the first.

The Hokies, though, did manage to put things away early with a 21-point second quarter.

Glennon replaced Taylor early in the second after the freshman QB left with an ankle injury and connected on his first three pass attempts for a total of 48 yards. Glennon later hit Justin Harper for a 21-yard pass play down the middle of the field to put the Hokies at the five-yard line, and Kenny Lewis took it the rest of the way for a TD run and a 20-7 lead midway through the second.

After yet another short Duke punt, Glennon capped a quick four-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Royal for a 20-point Virginia Tech advantage.

The game was further blown up when Virginia Tech's Stephan Virgil blocked a Blue Devils punt attempt, setting the Hokies up at the Duke one-yard line. On the very next play, Branden Ore rumbled into the end zone for the score and a 34-7 lead.

The Hokies extended their lead to 30 on a 29-yard field goal by Dunlevy 3:41 into the second half. That edge grew to 43-7 late in the third when Glennon connected with Morgan for a 40-yard touchdown pass, with Dunlevy missing the point after try.

Duke finally got back into the end zone after a 20-yard pass by Lewis to Brandon King 1:27 into the fourth quarter.
