Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Jake Christensen completed 17-of-25 passes for 182 yards with a touchdown and Brett Greenwood intercepted a pass in the end zone in the closing minutes, as Iowa continued its dominance over Illinois with a 10-6 win over the 18th-ranked Fighting Illini at Kinnick Stadium.
Albert Young ran for 99 yards on 25 carries, and Damian Sims chipped in with 45 yards on the ground. Wide Receiver Paul Chaney Jr. and tight end Brandon Myers had three receptions apiece for 47 and 38 yards, respectively.
Iowa (3-4, 1-3 Big Ten) snapped its four-game losing streak and halted an eight-game skid in conference play. The Hawkeyes have, however, won the last five meetings with the Illini.
"It was a big win for us," said Young. "The guys were in good spirits after the game and it was good to see smiles all around."
Illinois quarterback Isiah "Juice" Williams threw for 98 yards on 9-of-15 passing and ran for 41 yards on 10 carries. Rashard Mendenhall finished the game with 67 yards on the ground and Arrelious Benn caught four passes for 87 yards.
The Illini (5-2, 3-1), ranked for the first time in six years after having beaten two straight ranked opponents for the first time since 1959, saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Trailing 6-3 late in the third quarter, Christensen orchestrated a nine-play, 46-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brandon Myers with just six seconds to play in the period.
The Iowa defense was shutting down the Illini's vaunted triple-option attack, so coach Ron Zook decided to supplant Williams with Eddie McGee. McGee thought he completed an 83-yard touchdown pass for the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter, but the play was nullified by an illegal man downfield penalty on Michael Hommanawanui.
Illinois had a late charge, marching from its own 29 to the Iowa 11, but McGee's pass was intercepted by Greenwood at the goal line with 1:12 left.
On the opening drive, Iowa chose to go for it on 4th-and-7, but the Fighting Illini forced a turnover on downs. On the ensuing possession, Jason Reda capped a 10-play, 39-yard drive with a 46-yard field goal.
The Hawkeyes moved into Illinois territory on their first three possessions, but came away empty handed. Finally, on their fourth possession, aided by a key personal foul on defensive back Kevin Mitchell, which put the ball at the Illini 13, Iowa's Daniel Murray knotted the score with a 28-yard field goal in the waning moments of the first half.
Illinois opened the second half with a 12-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with a 23-yard field goal from Reda.
