Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Riley Skinner threw for a pair of touchdowns -- one a critical 35-yard strike to Kenneth Moore in the fourth quarter -- as Wake Forest toppled No. 21 Florida State, 24-21, in a key ACC matchup at BB&T Field.
Skinner ended 19-of-27 for 215 yards with two interceptions for the Demon Deacons (4-2, 3-1 ACC), who have been roughed up by the Seminoles historically but have now won two straight against them. They also posted a 30-0 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium last year.
Josh Adams rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Micah Andrews added 57 yards on the ground, and was the beneficiary of a game-defining facemask call late in the fourth.
Xavier Lee went 24-of-45 for 283 yards with two touchdown passes, a pair of picks and a rushing TD for Florida State (4-2, 1-2), which had won four in a row coming in and had just made their way back into the Top-25 poll. Both Preston Parker and Greg Carr finished with over 100 yards receiving and a score.
Wake Forest trailed by seven at halftime, but came back and ultimately forged ahead in the second half.
Alphonso Smith came up with a key interception midway through the third to foil a Seminoles' drive and set up a scoring march for the Deacons. With Andrews featured for most of the ensuing possession, Wake Forest moved downfield and tied the game on Skinner's six-yard TD toss to Adams.
The Demon Deacon defense then forced Florida State to punt and looked to have gone in front when Moore took the return and sped into the end zone. Wake Forest was whistled for a block in the back, though, negating the score.
The home team made amends.
With time getting short and the offense facing a 3rd-and-6, Moore broke behind the secondary and was hit by Skinner in stride with an over-the-shoulder pass for the 35-yard score and a 21-14 lead.
Lee tried to get those points right back, but on first down was intercepted by Chip Vaughn following a tip while trying to go deep.
Florida State tried to get the Deacons off the field quickly, and had Wake facing a 3rd-and-10. Alex Boston committed a crucial facemask penalty on an Andrews rush, however, resulting in a first down. That led to a 48-yard field goal by Sam Swank that extended the lead to 10 with 1:40 to go.
Lee scored on a 17-yard run with 17 seconds left to pull Florida State within three, but the onside kick was safely recovered by the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest opened the scoring early in the second quarter, as Adams broke loose down the right sideline for an 83-yard touchdown scamper.
The Seminoles struck right back on the following possession. Lee and Parker hooked up for a 58-yard completion to get Florida State deep into enemy territory. The tandem connected three plays later for a six-yard TD.
Florida State struck again in the closing seconds of the half, with Lee finding Carr this time from four yards out that put the visitors out in front 14-7 at intermission.
