Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Pat White passed for one touchdown and ran for another score before leaving the game with an injury, as 13th-ranked West Virginia pounded Syracuse, 55-14, at the Carrier Dome.
Owen Schmitt ran for a pair of scores for the Mountaineers (5-1, 1-1 Big East), who beat Syracuse for a sixth straight time and gave head coach Rich Rodriguez his 100th career victory. Keilen Dykes returned an interception for a score in the win.
White hurt his ribs on a 27-yard run midway through the third quarter. It was the second straight week he was forced out of a game. In last week's 21-13 loss at South Florida, White suffered a deep thigh bruise and was replaced by Jarrett Brown.
Before leaving this game, White completed 12-of-15 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 89 yards and a score before Brown entered and rushed for a touchdown. Brown also completed all five of his passes for 85 yards.
Andrew Robinson completed 5-of-15 passes for 100 yards with a TD for the Orange (1-5, 1-1), whose defense gave up 486 yards.
Ryan Mundy's interception led to West Virginia's first score, a seven-yard run by Schmitt on an option play to the left side.
Syracuse came right back, scoring on a one-yard plunge over the top by Curtis Brinkley with 6:38 left in the first quarter.
Then on 3rd-and-goal, White ran untouched to the right side of the end zone from a yard out with 2:13 remaining in the first to cap a 13-play, 77-yard march.
The Orange failed on a fake field goal try on the final play of the period as kicker John Barker was swarmed by tacklers.
West Virginia used its defense to expand to a 21-7 lead. Taj Smith tried to catch Robinson's middle screen pass, but he was tackled by Reed Williams as the ball arrived. Dykes took the ball out of the air and rumbled 19 yards to the end zone, 2:45 into the second.
Schmitt, who had a successful quick kick in the second quarter, scored from a yard out for a three-touchdown lead with 1:50 remaining in the half.
Pat McAfee's 49-yard field goal as time expired boosted the lead to 31-7 at the half, and the rout continued in the third quarter with White hitting Darius Reynaud with a 20-yard pass for a score.
McAfee split the uprights from 23 yards away with three minutes remaining in the third, before Robinson connected with Mike Williams on a 61-yard scoring play for a 41-14 margin.
Brown ran four yards to the end zone less than two minutes into the fourth quarter for West Virginia, which also got an 11-yard run for a TD from Jock Sanders with 8:42 left.
