Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Jameel Sewell threw three touchdown passes in leading the Virginia Cavaliers to a convincing 44-14 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers in non-conference play from Scott Stadium.
Sewell finished the night 16-of-31 for 169 yards and was second with 64 yards rushing on 12 attempts for the Cavaliers (4-1). Cedric Peerman contributed 87 yards and two scores on the ground as well.
"They gave us a lot of looks that left me one-on-one with a defender in a lot of space," Sewell noted of his running opportunities after the game. "The coaches allowed us to take advantage of that, and we were able to make some plays."
The Panthers (2-3) were paced by Pat Bostick who converted 18-of-31 for 181 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepted once and sacked three times in the setback.
"I'll tell you exactly what I told the players, I don't believe we are as bad of a football team as we have showed the past two weeks," said Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt. "But, and its as big but, we are what we are right now. We haven't given ourselves a chance to show what kind of team we are or what kind of team we can be.
Needing just 83 seconds of the first quarter to score, the Cavaliers jumped ahead of Pittsburgh when Jonathan Stupar reeled in a two-yard TD pass from Sewell. Despite a failed PAT, Virginia still enjoyed an early 6-0 advantage.
The Cavs ripped off 30 unanswered points in fact, as Sewell connected with Tom Santi on an 18-yard scoring strike and then a five-yard TD pass to Rashawn Jackson. Peerman's one-yard TD run, combined with a 23-yard field goal by Chris Gould in the second quarter, meant UVA was ahead 30-0 before the Panthers knew what hit them.
Pittsburgh's first score of the contest came at the five-minute mark of the second period when LeSean McCoy made it into the end zone from a yard away, leaving the Cavaliers with a 23-point edge at the break.
Following a scoreless third period, Bostick and Oderick Turner finished off a six-play, 57-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown connection to make the score 30-14.
A 13-yard TD run by Peerman and a four-yard touchdown scamper by Vic Hall put the game out of reach for the Cavaliers.
Pittsburgh, which had minus-three yards on punt returns, finished with only 288 yards of total offense.
