Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Branden Ore rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown to lead 17th-ranked Virginia Tech past North Carolina, 17-10, on Homecoming Day at Lane Stadium.
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor also ran one in for the Hokies (4-1, 1-0 ACC), who won their Atlantic Coast Conference opener for the fourth straight year. Virginia Tech, which will travel to face Clemson next week, has also won its last eight at home.
Anthony Elzy had 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while T.J. Yates completed 16-of-25 passes for 182 yards and touchdown for North Carolina (1-4, (0-2), which has dropped four straight since beating James Madison in its first game of the season. The Tar Heels have also now lost eight consecutive games versus ranked opponents.
Outside of last week's 37-10 drubbing at the hands of South Florida, though, North Carolina's other three losses have been by a combined 12 points.
Leading by just four at the half, Virginia Tech scored 10 unanswered points to seemingly put the game out of reach. The Tar Heels, though, had the ball in Virginia Tech territory down a touchdown with under two minutes to play, but could not convert.
Following a 34-yard kickoff return to start the second half, Jud Dunlevy put the Hokies in front, 10-3, with a 52-yard field goal.
Taylor, who was 10-of-19 for 66 yards with an interception, suffered a groin injury following a sack and had to leave for a play, but opening day starter Sean Glennon came in for a play and completed a 10-yard pass just prior to Dunlevy's kick.
North Carolina wasted a golden opportunity to tie the game on the ensuing possession when Ryan Houston fumbled into the end zone, only to see Virginia Tech recover for the touchback.
The Hokies then took advantage of another UNC turnover later in the stanza, as Xavier Adibi's interception set up Ore's one-yard touchdown run, which put Virginia Tech comfortably in front, 17-3, with 2:17 left in the third quarter.
North Carolina cut the lead to a touchdown with a 5:34 remaining in the game on Elzy's one-yard touchdown run.
After forcing a Hokies punt, the Tar Heels took over at their own 14 and got to Virginia Tech's 44, but a sack on third down pushed them back into their own territory. An incompletion on fourth down then gave the ball back to Virginia Tech, which ran out the clock.
Virginia Tech wasted little time getting on the board. After a three-and-out by the Tar Heels to open the contest, the Hokies needed just seven plays to hit paydirt, as Taylor scampered in from five yards out to put Virginia Tech up 7-0.
Eddie Royal set up the score with a 53-yard reverse on the Hokies' first play from scrimmage. Virginia Tech has now won 32 straight games when scoring first.
North Carolina took advantage of a turnover to get on the board early in the second quarter, as Deunta Williams' 39-yard interception return helped set up a 32-yard field goal by Connor Barth to cut the deficit to four with 9:48 left in the first half.
