NCAA Game Summary - Clemson at Georgia Tech

Final Score: Clemson 3 - Georgia Tech 13

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Travis Bell kicked a pair of field goals and Tashard Choice scored the only touchdown of the game as Georgia Tech pulled off a 13-3 upset of No. 13 Clemson at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Choice, who was questionable for the game with an injured hamstring, rushed for 145 yards on 32 carries for the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-2 ACC), who avoided their first 0-3 start in ACC play since 1994.

"(My leg) is ok," said Choice. "I wasn't at 100 percent today. I lied the whole week, but I had to. It was absolutely hurting me to watch my teammates struggling like they've been. All the hard work you put into the season, to not be able to be out there fighting with your teammates is hard. This game I was only about 80-85 percent, but it was good enough to play and stay on the field, so I was glad I could help."

Quarterback Taylor Bennett completed just 7-of-15 passes for 67 yards with an interception in the victory.

Clemson signal caller Cullen Harper finished 17-of-39 for 194 yards with an interception and was sacked six times, while Aaron Kelly had six catches for 53 yards. James Davis had 12 carries for 60 yards for the Tigers (4-1, 2-1), who were coming off a 42-20 rout of NC State.

The downfall for Clemson was the play of its special teams, which had a punt blocked, fumbled on a kickoff return and saw Mark Buchholz miss four of his five field goal attempts.

Clemson took the early lead, capitalizing on a fumble by Bennett on the first play of the game. Defensive end Phillip Merling recovered, and though the Tigers' drive stalled, Buchholz booted a season-long 48-yard field goal to make it 3-0 just 1:08 into the contest.

On the next drive Buchholz hooked a 47-yard attempt wide left, but the Yellow Jackets then went three-and-out on the ensuing possession.

Georgia Tech made amends, however, blocking a Clemson punt attempt on 4th- and-13, setting the Jackets up just eight yards from the end zone. Three plays later Choice rushed around the right side and scampered two yards for the score, putting Tech up 7-3.

Both sides were plagued by dropped passes in the second quarter, but Harper finally got hot for Clemson, orchestrating what seemed to be a scoring drive in the final minutes of the half. A 15-yard personal foul penalty negated a touchdown, however, and set them back to the Georgia Tech 21 before Harper was sacked. A 15-yard strike to Brian Linthicum on third down set the Tigers up for a 30-yard field goal by Buchholz, but he pulled this one wide right to keep it 7-3 at intermission.

Buchholz had the same result on a 50-yard try to open the third quarter, allowing the Yellow Jackets to widen their lead on their next possession. The team opted to keep the ball on the ground en route to a 47-yard field goal by Bell that made it 10-3 with 5:42 remaining in the stanza.

Clemson went to work after a 21-yard kickoff return by Jacoby Ford, and an 11- yard pass from Harper to Kelly moved the chains on 3rd-and-6. Ford then rushed for no gain, Harper was sacked and a pass to La'Donte Harris went for just eight yards, sending Buchholz trotting back onto the field. His 48-yard field goal attempt missed again.

Georgia Tech tacked on a 41-yard field goal by Bell with 11:38 remaining in the contest, and Morgan Burnett intercepted Harper on third down to halt Clemson's next drive at its own 15.

The Tigers then went three-and-out on their next chance, before Georgia Tech chewed up the final 7:23 of the game clock.

"That's the poorest we've played offensively in some time," said Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden. "There was no continuity the whole game. I don't remember gaining any momentum, first quarter, second quarter, third or fourth. I don't remember us consistently driving the ball. We had a couple of big plays where we moved it. Obviously we moved it well enough to get in position to miss four field goals. One of them was a turnover by them.

"Our statistics aren't very impressive running or throwing,. Nothing was very productive from what I saw."
