Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - Xavier Lee came on for an ineffective Drew Weatherford and completed 12-of-19 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, and added 59 yards on 11 carries rushing as the Florida State Seminoles upended No. 22 Alabama, 21-14.
De'Cody Fagg had four catches for 95 yards, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown catch for Florida State (3-1). Weatherford was pulled in the second quarter after completing 7-of-11 passes for 42 yards.
John Parker Wilson completed 28-of-53 passes for 240 yards and two scores for Alabama (3-2). D.J. Hall had seven catches for 83 yards and a score for the Crimson Tide.
"This was a very disappointing game. I was not pleased with how we played out there today," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. "I want to give Florida State a lot of credit. They played physical, they out-toughed us. This was the first game that I felt the other team played more physical than we were, in terms of how to control the line of scrimmage and tackling."
The defenses dominated the first half, with neither offense able to establish any rhythm, and the game was scoreless at the half. Lee came on for Weatherford early in the second quarter, but was unable to get anything going in his first few drives under center.
The Seminoles did finally get something going under Lee on their first drive of the second half, an eight-play, 67-yard scoring march. Lee completed passes of 14 and 28 yards to start the drive, which he capped with a seven-yard scoring strike to Fagg, and Florida State finally broke the stalemate to take a 7-0 lead with 10:50 left in the third quarter.
A Wilson turnover early in the fourth quarter then led to the next FSU score. Rolling left on a 3rd-and-15 at the Alabama five, the Alabama QB tried to tuck the ball, but was hit by FSU's Everett Brown, forcing a fumble and setting the Seminoles up at the five-yard-line.
On the very next play Antone Smith took the toss around the left edge and in, a five-yard score that gave the Seminoles a 14-0 lead with 9:03 remaining.
The Tide finally were able to mount an offensive charge of their own, and Wilson led them on a 13-play, 91-yard drive, capped by an eight-yard TD toss to Hall that made it a 14-7 game with 5:06 remaining.
Fagg broke through for a long score on the very next play from scrimmage though, taking the pass from Lee on the left and taking it 70 yards down the sideline and in to give the Seminoles a 21-7 lead with 4:46 left.
Wilson mounted one last charge for the Tide, hitting Keith Brown for a 17-yard scoring pass with just over a minute left, and Alabama cut the lead back to seven points.
Alabama appeared to recover the ensuing onsides kick, but the ball bounced off the helmet of an Alabama player before it went 10 yards, negating the recovery, and the Seminoles ran off the clock.
