Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Cedric Peerman had 28 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead the Virginia Cavaliers to a 28-23 victory over the visiting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in an ACC matchup at Scott Stadium.
Jameel Sewell had his strongest outing of the young season for the Cavaliers (3-1, 3-0 ACC), completing 16-of-25 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing). He did not throw any interceptions, nor was he sacked all game.
For Georgia Tech (2-2, 0-2), Taylor Bennett completed just 17-of-40 passes for 230 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jonathan Dwyer rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort.
The Yellow Jackets struck first, as Bennett tossed a 56-yard bomb to Demaryius Thomas to open up a 7-0 lead for Georgia Tech.
But the Cavaliers answered with a five-play, 81-yard drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown run by Peerman.
Later in the quarter, Sewell added his own four-yard touchdown run to give the Cavaliers a 14-7 lead.
Jeffrey Fitzgerald's 25-yard interception return on the ensuing possession made it 21-7 in favor of Virginia.
Georgia Tech, however, began to claw its way back, as Dwyer scored on a 21-yard touchdown run with 12:27 remaining in the second quarter.
Travis Bell's 30-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the half narrowed the gap to 21-17.
Bell connected on a 43-yarder at the 11:45 mark of the third quarter, and then a career-long 51-yarder to give the Yellow Jackets a 23-21 lead with 4:22 to play in the quarter.
Virginia recovered a muffed punt midway through the fourth quarter, and Sewell capitalized on the very next play by throwing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Staton Jobe for the go-ahead touchdown.
The Cavaliers held only a 354-351 advantage in total yards, as the difference in the game turned out to be Fitzgerald's interception return and the fourth- quarter muffed punt by Georgia Tech.
