Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - C.J. Spiller and James Davis both caught a touchdown pass and rushed for a score, as the 15th-ranked Clemson Tigers pounded the North Carolina State Wolfpack, 42-20, at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Davis rushed for a season-high 166 yards and Spiller ran for 114 for the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who downed Furman last weekend, 38-10. Cullen Harper completed 25-of-39 passes for 268 yards with touchdown passes to both tailbacks, and Mark Buchholz converted four field goals in the win.
Darrell Blackman returned a kickoff a school-record 99 yards for a touchdown and caught a nine-yard TD pass for the Wolfpack (1-3, 0-2), who landed in the win column last weekend, dropping Wofford, 38-17. Daniel Evans completed 16- of-25 passes for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception after starting quarterback Harrison Beck left early with an injury.
Clemson got going early, and Harper's 11-yard touchdown pass to Spiller capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive with 11:32 remaining in the first.
NC State wasted no time matching its opponent on the scoreboard, as Blackman returned the ensuing kickoff a school-record 99 yards for a touchdown.
Clemson answered about four minutes later on a 28-yard field goal by Buchholz, who gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 7:52 on the clock, before a 44-yard Spiller touchdown run made their lead double-digits, 17-7, heading into the second.
The Tigers' first drive in the second quarter displayed their dominant ground attack on three straight plays, as Davis rushed for 13 yards, Spiller for 12, and Jacoby Ford broke free for 53 yards with a personal foul bringing the ball back to the State 24-yard line. Five plays later, they found the end zone when Harper hooked up with Davis for a three-yard touchdown pass with 9:13 left in the first half.
NC State cut its deficit back to 10 on a 17-yard rush by Andre Brown, who capped a 10-play, 81-yard drive with 3:46 on the clock, but Buchholz's 46-yard field goal at the buzzer increased Clemson's margin to 27-14 at halftime.
Clemson wasted little time out of the locker room, driving 69 yards on eight plays capped by a 29-yard Buchholz field goal. The Tigers next chewed up nearly six minutes on 16 plays, the last of which was a one-yard touchdown run by Davis with 4:06 remaining in the third.
