Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Cedric Peerman rushed for 186 yards and one touchdown as the Virginia Cavaliers defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels, 22-20, in an ACC tussle from Kenaan Stadium.
Virginia (2-1, 2-0 ACC) did not have much success in the passing game, as Jameel Sewell completed just 11-of-17 passes for 96 yards. Peter Lalich also saw time under center and threw for just 57 yards on 7-of-10 passing.
As for the Tar Heels (1-2, 0-1), they were led by T. J. Yates, who threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns. Yates completed 25-of-38 passes, but also tossed an interception in the loss. Hakeem Nicks was the main target, as the wide out grabbed seven passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cavaliers used a one-yard touchdown run by Peerman midway through the first frame to take a 7-0 edge over UNC.
Virginia extended its lead to 10-0 when Chris Gould connected on a 51-yard field goal late in the quarter.
Gould added another field goal early in the second frame, as this kick came from 28 yards out, pushing the Cavs lead to 13-0.
With just over six minutes remaining in the second frame Gould pushed Virginia's lead to 16-0 when he nailed a 37-yard field goal.
Fortunately for the Tar Heels they were able to find the end zone with less than a minute remaining in the first half. The score came when Yates connected with Nicks for a four-yard scoring strike, cutting UNC's deficit to 16-7 as the two teams entered the break.
The Cavs opened the third quarter with a 17-play, 57-yard drive which resulted in a 48-yard field goal by Gould.
The Tar Heels answered right back, as Yates and Nicks hooked up once again, this score coming on a 53-yard pass, which cut UNC's deficit to 19-14 late in the third quarter.
Midway through the final stanza, the Cavs pushed their lead to 22-14 thanks to yet another field goal by Gould, this kick coming from 32 yards out.
With just under two minutes remaining in the contest Yates hit Richard Quinn with a two-yard touchdown pass. However, the Tar Heels were unable to convert their two-point conversion, leaving the score at 22-20.
The Cavs were able to hold off North Carolina for the rest of the contest en route to the two-point win.
Virginia tallied a whopping 197 rushing yards in the contest, while UNC collected only 63 yards on the ground.
