Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Drew Weatherford threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Florida State Seminoles to a come-from-behind, 34-24 win over the visiting UAB Blazers in a non-conference affair.
Weatherford was 22-of-35 passing for the Seminoles (1-1), who trailed by a two- touchdown margin in the second quarter. Although Weatherford was not sacked in the game, he did throw a first-quarter interception that was returned for a touchdown. He hooked up with Greg Carr four times for 82 yards and a touchdown.
For UAB (0-2), Sam Hunt finished the night 17-of-35 for 226 yards, two touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception. His favorite target, Joe Webb, caught six passes for 89 yards and a score.
The Blazers got on the board first, when Swayze Waters booted a 27-yard field goal with 11:08 to play in the first quarter.
Less than a minute later, UAB went on top, 10-0, after Will Dunbar stepped in front of a Weatherford pass and returned it 21 yards for a TD.
Later in the quarter, the Seminoles narrowed the gap to 10-3 on a 28-yard field goal by Gary Cismesia.
With 11:21 remaining in the second quarter, Hunt found paydirt from four yards out, giving the Blazers a 17-3 lead.
FSU climbed to within a touchdown when Weatherford connected with Charlie Graham for a two-yard score at the 4:07 mark of the second quarter.
The Seminoles tied the game at 17 apiece, when Weatherford found Carr for an eight-yard scoring strike with 7:24 to play in the third.
Marcus Tims gave FSU a 24-17 lead on a one-yard touchdown plunge at the 2:23 mark of the third quarter.
But the Blazers responded with a touchdown of their own, as Hunt tossed a 16- yard dart to Webb.
Not to be outdone, Weatherford struck back with a 50-yard scoring strike to Richard Goodman on the final play of the third quarter.
FSU iced the game with a 40-yard Cismesia field goal in the fourth.
Both teams were penalized 12 times and lost two fumbles, but it was FSU's offense, which accounted for 520 total yards, that was the difference in the game.
