Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Cedric Peerman rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, as the Virginia Cavaliers defeated the Duke Blue Devils, 24-13, in the ACC opener for both schools.
Peter Lalich and Jameel Sewell combined for 191 yards and two scores on 22- of-32 pass attempts for the Cavaliers (1-1, 1-0 ACC), who won their ACC opener for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Tom Santi caught a team-high six passes for 54 yards and a pair of scores, as Virginia earned its 600th victory in school history.
Thaddeus Lewis threw for 137 yards and a score for Duke (0-2, 0-1), but he completed just 14-of-30 tosses and was intercepted once. His main target was Jomar Wright, who pulled in four balls for 32 yards and a score. The Blue Devils have now dropped 22 straight games, marking the nation's longest losing streak. The team has also fallen in 18 consecutive conference affairs.
Sewell completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Santi less than five minutes into the game, giving Virginia an early lead.
Just over five minutes later, the Cavaliers struck again, as Peerman scampered 58 yards for a touchdown.
Duke earned a safety late in the first quarter, making it a 14-2 game after one period.
A 27-yard field goal by Chris Gould at the end of the first half extended the Cavaliers' lead to 17-2.
With under three minutes left in the third quarter, Duke scored its first touchdown of the game, as Lewis hooked up with Wright from 17 yards away. The two-point conversion attempt was as success, pulling the Blue Devils within a touchdown.
The Blue Devils struck again just under two minutes later, as Joe Surgan booted a 21-yard field goal to put the score at 17-13.
Virginia, however, answered back with a Lalich three-yard touchdown pass to Santi midway through the final period. Neither offense would be heard from again, as the Cavaliers earned the 24-13 victory.
The Cavaliers limited the Blue Devils to just 229 yards of total offense and 12 first downs in the game.
