East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Brian Hoyer threw for 250 yards and a pair of scores, as the Michigan State Spartans outlasted the Bowling Green Falcons, 28-17, in non-conference action from Spartan Stadium.
Hoyer completed 17-of-29 tosses for the Spartans (2-0), although he was also intercepted twice. His primary target was Devin Thomas, who caught four passes for 156 yards and a score. Javon Ringer paced the ground attack with 83 yards and a sore on 22 carries, while Jehuu Caulcrick added 53 yards and a touchdown on 14 totes.
Tyler Sheehan threw for 295 yards and a score on 32-of-50 pass attempts for BGSU (1-1), but he was also intercepted two times. Fred Barnes was his main outlet, as he pulled down nine balls for 80 yards.
MSU scored the only points of the first quarter, when Ringer capped a five- play, 94-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run at the 3:22 mark of the period.
BGSU answered quickly though, as it scored back-to-back touchdowns in the opening five minutes of the second quarter to grab a 14-7 lead. Sheehan first threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Pronty just 50 seconds into the frame, before scampering six yards himself for another score at the 10:26 mark.
With 7:06 remaining the first half, the Spartans tied the score at 14-14, as Hoyer completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Davis.
MSU struck first out of the break, when Caulcrick rumbled five yards for a score at the 9:59 mark of the third quarter.
A Sinisa Vrvilo 31-yard field goal with 1:37 to play in the third quarter, pulled the Falcons within four points at 21-17.
The Spartans countered early in the fourth quarter, as Hoyer threw a 17-yard touchdown strike to Thomas. Neither offense managed to score the rest of the way, as MSU posted the 28-17 triumph.
MSU rushed for 142 yards in the game, while BGSU gained just 47 yards on the ground.
