NCAA Game Summary - Virginia at Wyoming

Final Score: Virginia 3 - Wyoming 23

Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - The Wyoming defense held the Virginia Cavaliers to a mere 110 yards of total offense as the Cowboys posted a 23-3 win in non- conference action from War Memorial Stadium.

Virginia (0-1) registered a mere five first downs and seven yards rushing as Wyoming (1-0) avenged a 13-12 overtime setback to the Cavs on the road a season ago.

Cowboys quarterback Karsten Sween converted 25-of-34 for a career-high 253 yards and a score for the home team, while Devin Moore gained 125 yards and scored a TD on 18 carries as well.

Named the starting quarterback heading into the season after performing so well in the second half of 2006, Sween was just as excited as the sellout crowd.

"I felt good out on the field. The no huddle is so fast and sometimes it took my breath away. Overall, it was awesome."

Quarterbacks Jameel Sewell and Peter Lalich combined to hit 14-of-29 passing for just 103 yards, with the former tossing a pair of picks and being sacked twice in the setback.

The only scoring of the first quarter came courtesy of a 48-yard field goal by Wyoming's Billy Vinnedge. The Pokes added a touchdown in the second when Sween and Greg Bolling combined on a four-yard scoring toss to make the score 10-0.

Virginia's lone score of the contest was a 42-yard field goal by Chris Gould as time expired in the first half.

Field goals of 40 and 39 yards by Vinnedge followed in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, while a 49-yard TD run by Moore happened at the 6:17 mark of the final frame to complete the revenge win.

"If this was a heavyweight match, we threw the first punch," noted Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn. "Our defensive play was amazing. They couldn't throw or run which made it a long day for their offensive coordinator. I credit Coach Breske and the defensive coaches for putting together a great defensive plan."

A sellout crowd of 31,620 established a new opening-day record for War Memorial Stadium.
