GAME NOTES: In what appears to be a lopsided Big 12 matchup, the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners play host to the Baylor Bears. Baylor has dropped six consecutive decisions, including a 38-7 home loss to Texas Tech last weekend. The Bears are 1-4 on the road this season and have lost six straight Big 12 road tilts. As for Oklahoma, it has run off four consecutive victories since the lone loss of the season at Colorado. Last weekend, the Sooners flexed their muscle with a 42-14 beating of a solid Texas A&M club. They are a perfect 5-0 at home this season and are clearly the heavy favorites in this weekend's clash. Oklahoma has never lost to Baylor, having won all 16 games in the series. In fact, the Sooners are the only Big 12 team that the Bears have never defeated.
Baylor was on the verge of being shut out by Texas Tech last weekend, as the lone score registered by the Bears came with just 49 seconds remaining on the game clock. Only 282 total yards were posted by Baylor, which was limited to 91 rushing yards on 35 attempts. As for the passing game, Blake Szymanski completed 25-of-41 passes for 191 yards, and he was sacked twice to go along with an interception. Baylor is averaging 18.3 ppg, an output that isn't going to scare Oklahoma one bit. The Bears have struggled mightily to move the ball on the ground, as they are averaging a mere 68.1 rushing ypg on 2.8 ypc. A great deal of pressure falls on Szymanski, who has completed 55.4 percent of his passes for 2,338 yards and 18 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. He has spread the ball around admirably, as many receivers have made solid contributions.
It is no secret that Texas Tech is a team that relies heavily on the pass to move the ball and score points. Despite that knowledge, Baylor was completing incapable of slowing down the Red Raiders last weekend. Tech finished with 490 passing yards on 44-of-59 completions, and the Bears did not register a single interception. The score could have been even more lopsided if Texas Tech didn't fail to score on three of its eight trips to the red zone. Opponents are racking up 34.7 ppg against Baylor, which is yielding 446.1 total ypg. A high total of 38 touchdowns have been surrendered by the defense, including 22 rushing scores. As for the pass defense, the Bears are giving up 279.6 passing yards per contest.
Oklahoma has been nothing short of explosive on offense this season, as the club is averaging 44.2 ppg to go along with 451.4 total ypg. The man calling the shots from the quarterback position is Sam Bradford, who has clearly been one of the nation's best signal callers. Bradford has completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,165 yards with 25 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He has a number of talented wideouts to lean on, including Juaquin Iglesias, Malcolm Kelly and Jermaine Gresham, who have combined for 22 touchdowns. The ground attack is led by the duo of Patrick Allen and DeMarco Murray, as those two runners have combined for 1,157 rushing yards and 15 scores. Bradford threw five touchdown passes in the romp over Texas A&M last weekend. Four of those scoring passes went to Gresham, a big red-zone target. Murray also managed a rushing score.
Opponents are scoring 16.3 ppg against Oklahoma, which is holding foes to 297.0 total ypg. The Sooners are limiting teams to 75.4 rushing ypg on an average of 2.2 ypc. Although many more yards have been racked up through the air against Oklahoma, the team has recorded 14 interceptions to go along with 28 sacks. The defense has been tremendous on third downs, limiting foes to 30 percent success on conversion attempts. Curtis Lofton has been one of the nation's most active defenders, as he leads the Sooners with 101 total tackles, 45 more stops than his closest teammate. Auston English has posted 13 TFLs, including 9.5 sacks, but he has a leg injury that will likely keep him out of this weekend's clash. Oklahoma allowed only 14 points to Texas A&M last weekend, and both scores for the Aggies came in the fourth quarter long after the outcome had been decided.
Clearly, Oklahoma is far superior to Baylor and should cruise to victory. The Sooners will have a chance to rest its starters, as players like Sam Bradford may not step foot on the playing field in the second half.
