GAME NOTES: The Arkansas Razorbacks take a break from their brutal SEC schedule to host the lowly Florida International Golden Panthers. At 0-7, Florida International has been arguably the nation's worst team thus far. The Golden Panthers have not scored more than 16 points in any of their outings and have been held below 10 points on five occasions. They are coming off a 28-14 loss to UL-Monroe, their most narrow margin of defeat thus far. As for Arkansas, it has won three of its last four games, including a 44-8 romp over Ole Miss last weekend. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, they are still just 1-3 in SEC play and are seemingly out of the race for the league title. This game marks the first-ever meeting between Arkansas and Florida International on the gridiron.
One would have to look to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to find a team that has played as poorly on offense as Florida International. The Golden Panthers are scoring a lowly 8.3 ppg while gaining just 227.6 total ypg. Through seven games, they have managed only six offensive touchdowns. Just two of those scores have come on the ground, as the running game has been responsible for 91.1 ypg on 2.8 ypc. FIU has thrown 11 interceptions and has lost 11 fumbles, as turnovers have been a key ingredient to the winless season. In the 14-point loss to UL-Monroe last time out, the Golden Panthers posted 323 total yards, a solid effort by a weak offensive unit. Julian Reams ran for 55 yards and a touchdowns, while Wayne Younger threw for 198 yards and a score. Unfortunately, he was sacked six times.
Opponents are scoring 38.9 ppg against FIU, which is yielding 455.9 total ypg. Stopping the run has been a major problem area for the Golden Panthers, as they are surrendering 200.7 ypg on 4.9 ypc. They have allowed 31 touchdowns to opposing offenses, 20 of which have been rushing scores. Also, with only three interceptions, opposing quarterbacks have had an easy time moving the ball through the air. The Golden Panthers allowed four touchdowns to the UL-Monroe offense last weekend, including a pair of rushing scores. They permitted 430 total yards, including 270 yards through the air on 17-of-24 completions.
The nation's best tailback duo can be found at Arkansas, as Darren McFadden and Felix Jones are both big-time NFL prospects. Largely because of those two individuals, the Razorbacks are averaging 37.7 ppg while gaining 452.6 total ypg. The ground attack is the main component of the offense, as they are posting 293.1 ypg on 6.0 ypc. McFadden has gained 932 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while posting 5.5 ypc. While those numbers are impressive, Jones has actually been much more effective than his all-world teammate. As a runner, Jones has posted 774 yards and seven touchdowns on only 81 carries, a staggering average of 9.6 ypc. Jones has also returned two kicks for touchdowns, as there is nothing he can't do on the field. Casey Dick has taken almost every snap at quarterback and has completed 52.9 percent of his passes for 943 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. Dick threw three touchdown passes in the win over Ole Miss last weekend, and Jones rushed for two scores. Jones once again did more with his carries than did McFadden.
Opponents are scoring 21.1 ppg against Arkansas, which is yielding 335.1 total ypg. There is room for improvement against the run, as the Razorbacks are allowing 151.0 ypg on 4.0 ypc. As for the pass defense, it has been tremendous, as opposing quarterbacks have completed barely over 40 percent of their passes with more interceptions than touchdowns. One area that could certainly stand some improvement is the sacks department, as Arkansas has only 12 to its credit. Matt Hewitt leads the defense with 63 total tackles, and Jerell Norton is tops with four interceptions. Give the Arkansas defense a ton of credit for holding an SEC opponents to eight points on the road. The Razorbacks limited Ole Miss to fewer than 300 total yards last weekend.
McFadden is due for a big day. He hasn't played poorly by any means and has a terrific relationship with Jones, his teammate, but any great competitor will get tired of being outshined eventually.
