GAME NOTES: A pair of teams trying to find their way back into the win column collide in Lubbock this Saturday, as the Colorado Buffaloes lock horns with the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Big 12 play at Jones AT&T Stadium. For the second straight week, the Buffaloes found themselves on the losing end of a decision, dropping a 19-14 affair against nationally-ranked Kansas this past weekend. With the loss, the team dipped to an even 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. To make matters worse, Colorado now hits the road, where it has won just once in three tries thus far. As for Texas Tech, it is coming off its worst loss of the season, a 41-10 beating at the hands of nationally- ranked Missouri last weekend. The loss snapped the club's three-game win streak and dropped it to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in league action. The Raiders, however, now head back to the friendly confines of Jones AT&T Stadium, where they have won six straight, including all four this season. Texas Tech and Colorado have split eight previous meetings on the gridiron, with the Buffaloes posting a 30-6 triumph in last season's encounter in Boulder.
The Buffaloes are averaging a respectable 380.3 total ypg, including 247.1 passing ypg, this season, but they have really set themselves back with turnovers, committing 21 already. Last weekend it was the same story, as Colorado gained 353 total yards, but turned the ball over three times in a 19-14 loss to Kansas. Quarterback Cody Hawkins threw a pair of interceptions in the setback and he finished the game with 287 yards and two scores. The redshirt freshman has struggled to stay consistent this season, as he has thrown 14 interceptions against 13 touchdowns, clearly a negative ratio. Still, Hawkins has had his moments and he is just 78 passing yards away from surpassing the 2,000-yard plateau. Scotty McKnight has been one of his go-to- guy receivers and he leads the team with 33 catches and 387 yards. McKnight, however, was virtually nonexistent last weekend, catching just two passes for 13 yards. Tailback Hugh Charles also struggled last weekend, as he rushed for only 39 yards on 11 carries. It was certainly a disappointing effort from Charles, who leads the club with 562 rushing yards behind a solid 5.8 yard per carry average.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Buffaloes haven't been too bad this season, allowing 129.5 rushing ypg and 201.0 passing ypg. The unit, though, could stand to make a few more big plays, forcing only 12 turnovers this season. Last weekend, Colorado did a solid job on defense, as it limited Kansas to just 333 total yards. The unit even forced a pair of turnovers, although it wasn't enough when all was said and done. Jordon Dizon, as always, paced the team with 12 tackles, including 10 solo. For the year, Dizon has 111 tackles to his credit and that not only leads the Big 12, but the nation as well.
One of the premier offenses will be on showcase this weekend, as Texas Tech ranks first in total yards (557.8) and passing (487.5 ypg) and fourth in scoring (45.0 ypg). The Raiders are converting 52.0 percent of their third down attempts, and of their 36 red zone scores, 35 have come via touchdown. Last weekend though, Texas Tech was shut down, gaining only 388 total yards and a mere 10 points in a lopsided loss to Missouri. Quarterback Graham Harrell completed 44-of-69 pass attempts for 397 yards and a score, but he was intercepted four times. It was one of the worst efforts of the season from Harrell, who had thrown just three interceptions in the team's first seven games. Still, Harrell is one of the top players at his position and he has completed an efficient 72.6 percent of his throws for a nation-best 443.5 passing ypg and 32 touchdowns. His main target is Michael Crabtree, who hauled in 10 balls for 76 yards last weekend. Despite last weekend's mediocre performance, Crabtree is having one of the best freshman seasons in NCAA history. Through eight games, Crabtree leads the nation receptions (88), receiving yards (1,320) and touchdowns (17). His 17 touchdowns catches set a NCAA record for a freshman, and is just one shy of breaking the Big 12 single- season record set by Rashaun Woods in 2002. Helping take some of the pressure off Crabtree is Danny Amendola, who has pulled down 71 balls for 849 yards and five scores.
Considering how powerful their offense is, the Red Raiders are doing a rather good job in holding their opponents to 23.1 ppg and just 351.9 total ypg. The unit has really done a nice job against the pass, allowing just 182.5 ypg and 10 touchdowns through the air. Last weekend, however, this unit was no match for Missouri, which racked up 422 total yards, including 212 on the ground. The defense was obviously worn down by the run, as it surrendered 17 points in the fourth quarter alone. Brandon Williams guided the defense in defeat with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Williams has provided the Raiders with a solid pass rush this season and he leads the club with 9.5 TFLs and four sacks.
Texas Tech has a big advantage playing this game at home and it should be able to rebound behind its passing attack, which can put up points in a hurry.
