GAME NOTES: A pivotal Big Ten battle takes place in Ann Arbor this Saturday, as the Purdue Boilermakers bring their high-octane offense to town to tangle with the suddenly surging Michigan Wolverines. Joe Tiller's Purdue club comes in stinging a bit from its first loss of the season, a 23-7 setback at home to Ohio State. The Boilermakers had run out to a 5-0 start prior to the OSU bout and are a perfect 2-0 in road games this season. As for Michigan, four consecutive wins has a way of making up for one of the most disappointing starts in program history. The Wolverines, who many thought would win the Big Ten and challenge for the national title prior to the start of the season, are 2-0 in league play and are fresh off a 33-22 win over MAC foe Eastern Michigan. Michigan has dominated the all-time series with Purdue, winning 40 of the 52 previous meetings. The Boilermakers, who have dropped their last four matchups with the Maize and Blue, have lost 16 straight in Ann Arbor, last winning there in 1966.

Getting off to a fast start has been Purdue's m.o. this season, as the team is outscoring the opposition in the first half 137-37, including an impressive 82-27 in the opening quarter. As a result, the Boilermakers are the Big Ten's most explosive offense, averaging 39 points, 302.8 passing yards and 458.5 total yards per contest. Quarterback Curtis Painter is having a career year, completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,810 yards with 19 TDs and only three INTs. As a result, WR Dorien Bryant heads the PU pass-catching effort with 42 grabs for 446 yards and four scores. Greg Orton and Dustin Keller have been highly productive as well, combining for 55 receptions, 744 yards and seven TDs. The Purdue ground assault features Kory Sheets and his 535 yards and five TDs. Sheets is averaging 5.6 ypc and nearly 90 ypg. Despite 31 completions and 268 yards from Painter, and a combined 17 catches for 192 yards from the duo of Orton and Keller, the PU offense stalled more times than not in last week's loss to Ohio State, scoring just one TD on the day. Sheets had a rough outing, finishing with a meager 20 yards on seven carries.

The Buckeyes gained 381 total yards last week against the Purdue defense -- 181 on the ground and 200 through the air. The Boilermakers did come up with three INTs and held the Ohio State offense to just a 5-of-14 success rate on third down, but the Buckeyes scored on both trips to the red zone and seemingly had control of the game on both sides of the ball from the outset. Anthony Heygood led the PU stand with 11 tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage, one of which was sack. David Pender, Brandon King and Torri Williams each had a pick for Tiller's squad. Through six games, foes are putting up 20.8 ppg behind 383.8 ypg of total offense. Defending the pass has proven more difficult than not for the Boilermakers, as they allow nearly 250 ypg through the air. Opponents have been successful just 30 percent of the time on third downs this year. Stanford Keglar paces the defense with 41 stops, while Heygood leads the way with nine TFLs. Purdue has come up with 16 turnovers thus far, nine of which have been INTs.

Michigan's Mike Hart is just 24 yards shy of reaching the 1,000-yard mark and his current average of 162.7 ypg leads the Big Ten and ranks second in the country. Hart became Michigan's all-time leading rusher with his season-high 215 yards last week against Eastern Michigan. He scored three TDs in that game, giving him 10 for the season. Michigan is averaging 203.3 rushing ypg this year, helping the club score 25.3 ppg. When the Wolverines look to the sky to move the football, QB Chad Henne is the guy entrusted with that job and he has responded by averaging nearly 200 passing ypg. His TD-to-INT ratio of 6-to-4 is far from impressive, but he has played better of late. Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham are the team's top receivers, although Manningham sat out last week's game. Michigan rolled up 459 yards of total offense in the win over EMU, tallying 255 yards on the ground. In addition to Hart's effort, Arrington enjoyed a solid afternoon, catching six balls for 102 yards and a TD. Henne finished 17-of-26 for 195 yards with one score. He was, however, picked off twice.

The Michigan defense stood its ground last week against the Eagles, yielding 304 total yards, including just 169 by way of the pass. The Wolverines proved an opportunistic bunch, recording four takeaways (two fumble recoveries, two INTs). They also posted three sacks, two coming from Tim Jamison. Obi Ezeh led the defense with nine tackles, while Brandon Logan logged seven. The Wolverines have done a terrific job disrupting plays at the point of attack this year, making a whopping 50 stops in the backfield. Shawn Crable leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally in TFLs with 16, while Brandon Graham has seven sacks to his credit. Jamison and Crable have a combined 10 sacks, the team as a whole laying claim to 23 QB takedowns to this point. Owners of 19 turnovers through six games, the Wolverines are tied for third-most nationally in that category.

This should be a wildly entertaining affair between two explosive offensive football teams. With history and the home crowd on its side, expect Michigan to prevail and keep pace in the race for the Big Ten title.
