GAME NOTES: The red hot RedHawks of Miami-Ohio will host the Bowling Green Falcons this Saturday afternoon in a Mid-American Conference tilt at Yager Stadium. After winning back-to-back games against Temple and Western Kentucky, the Falcons suffered an embarrassing loss this past weekend, falling to Boston College, 55-24. Last season the Falcons struggled in conference action, posting a mere 3-5 ledger against league opponents. However, since the beginning of the 2004-05 campaign the Falcons are a solid 15-10 in MAC action. As for the RedHawks, they have won two consecutive contests, defeating Syracuse, 17-14, and Kent State, 20-13. Last season the RedHawks were a terrible 2-6 inside league action, but this year the team has opened with a solid 2-0 start. Next up for Miami will be back-to-back road games against Temple and Vanderbilt. The RedHawks used stingy defense to upend the Falcons last season by a 9-7 score. The win extended Miami-Ohio's lead in the all-time series to a whopping, 39-19-5.
The Falcons have survived offensively solely on the play of its passing attack, which is producing a whopping, 352 ypg. Overall the Falcons are averaging an impressive 438.2 total ypg, and that has led to 32.4 ppg. The Falcons passing attack continued to produce this past weekend against Boston College, however, despite the strong play Bowling Green suffered a 31-point loss. Quarterback Tyler Sheehan threw for 275 yards in the loss and one score, but also tossed five interceptions. It was easily the worst performance of the year for Sheehan who has completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 1,579 yards and 11 scores against nine interceptions. Sheehan's main target on the season has been Freddie Barnes, who is currently leading the team with 37 receptions, 430 yards and five touchdowns. Corey Partridge has also done well thus far, hauling in 34 passes for 303 yards and one score. Unfortunately the ground game has been atrocious in the first five games, as the Falcons are rushing for just 86.2 ypg on only 3.3 ypc.
Bowling Green's main problem this season has come against the run, as opponents are abusing BGSU for 189.4 rushing ypg. However, this past weekend the Falcons were destroyed by Boston College's passing attack, allowing the Eagles to accumulate 325 yards and four scores through the air. Overall the Falcons were dismantled for 471 total yards in the contest, allowing Boston College to post 55 points on the scoreboard. Bowling Green also struggled to make big plays during the matchup, finishing the game with just one turnover and zero sacks. Pressuring the quarterback has been a big issue for BGSU, as the team has only nine sacks in the first five games. John Haneline has been the top performer for Bowling Green's defense and heads into this contest with 50 tackles, 4.0 TFLs and one sack. Erique Dozier has also done a solid job, posting 43 stops to go along with two interceptions.
Although the RedHawks head into this contest with a two-game winning streak, the offensive unit for Miami has been very weak. The RedHawks are currently producing only 16.0 ppg in 2007, while accumulating a mediocre 363.7 total ypg. The ground game for the RedHawks is churning out 137.3 ypg on the season, but the passing attack has done slightly better, posting 226.3 ypg. It was the success of the passing attack this past weekend that led Miami to a win over Kent State, as Miami finished with 310 passing yards. Daniel Raudabaugh and Mike Kokal both saw time under center, but it was Raudabaugh who had the slightly better performance. Raudabaugh completed 8-of-12 passes in the contest, finishing the game with 186 yards and one touchdown. On the season however, Raudabaugh has been very inconsistent, completing just 49.6 percent of his passes, while tossing four touchdowns against three interceptions. Unfortunately the RedHawks can not find much consistency in the backfield either, but that is because running backs Brandon Murphy and Andre Bratton have both fallen with injures. As of now, Austin Sykes has been the top performer in the ground game for Miami, as the tailback has 245 yards and one score on the season.
The defensive unit for the RedHawks has been terrible all year, and the team's struggles continued this past weekend, as Miami was abused for 475 total yards. Despite the poor performance the RedHawks were able to hang on to a seven-point victory. The biggest concern for Miami has been its inability to stop the run, as opponents are churning out 202.5 ypg. Unfortunately the team had more trouble this past weekend, as the Golden Flashes gathered 203 yards on 45 carries. On a positive note, the RedHawks were able to force three turnovers in the contest and also collected five sacks. Both numbers were shocking considering the team entered the matchup with only six forced miscues and just four sacks overall. Clayton Mullins, who is leading the RedHawks with 66 tackles, had another solid performance against KSU, as the linebacker grabbed nine stops and one sack.
The RedHawks have overachieved the past couple of weeks, and while the team is playing better, look for Miami to take a step back this weekend against a tough Bowling Green offense.
