GAME NOTES: A set of teams in search of their first Big 12 win of the season square off in Lubbock this Saturday, as the Iowa State Cyclones conclude a three-game road swing against the Texas Tech Red Raiders from Jones AT&T Stadium. The Cyclones enter the contest on a low note, as they dropped a 35-17 decision to nationally-ranked Nebraska in their league opener last weekend. It was the second consecutive loss by ISU, which dipped to just 1-4 on the season. Following Saturday's game, the Cyclones will return home to face a pair of ranked teams in Texas and Oklahoma. As for TTU, it had little trouble disposing of Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) member Northwestern State last weekend, defeating it by an impressive score of 75-7. It was the first time in 56 years that a team had scored 60 or more points against Northwestern State. Now at 4-1 overall, the Red Raiders turn their focus back to Big 12 play, where they have participated in just one game thus far, a 49-45 setback at Oklahoma State on September 22nd. TTU has won six of the seven previous meetings with ISU, including all four encounters in Lubbock.

Turnovers have played a big part in the Cyclones early season struggles, as they have committed 15 miscues and that has certainly overshadowed the 363.4 total ypg they are currently averaging. Last weekend, ISU ran a school-record 102 plays and totaled 415 yards, but it committed four turnovers, and that made the difference in a 35-17 setback to Nebraska. Quarterback Bret Meyer account for three of those turnovers on interceptions, including one of which was returned 93 yards for a touchdown. It was a rough game for Meyer, who completed just 26-of-51 throws for 281 yards. Despite the outing, Meyer has fared well this season, completing an efficient 62.6 percent of his pass attempts for 1,092 yards. He however, has thrown just four touchdowns against eight interceptions. R.J. Sumrall and Todd Blythe have formed a solid tandem in the passing game and they have combined for 52 catches, 568 receiving yards and two scores. In the backfield, J.J. Bass leads the team with 390 rushing yards and four touchdowns, although he missed last game. Jason Scales stepped in for Bass last weekend and he rushed for a career-high 115 yards and two scores on 31 carries.

The Cyclones' defense has done a respectable job this season, as they are limiting their opponents to 138.4 rushing ypg and just 179.4 passing ypg. The unit has allowed just seven passing touchdown against four interceptions, but those numbers may change for the worse this weekend against TTU's potent air attack. Last weekend, ISU forced three turnovers and held Nebraska to 369 total yards of offense, although that effort wasn't enough. The team gave up 239 passing yards in the game and three touchdowns through the air. Chris Singleton guided the defense in defeat with eight stops and his second interception of the season, while Alvin Bowen checked in with seven tackles and two TFLs. For the year, Bowen leads the club with 39 tackles and 6.0 TFLs and he also has a sack and interception to his credit.

The Red Raiders possess the most potent offensive attack around, as they rank first in the nation in scoring (54.6 ppg), total yards (610.4 ypg) and passing (523.6 ypg). Quarterback Graham Harrell is having a phenomenal season in this spread attack, as he has completed an efficient 71.9 percent of his throws for 2,301 yards with an incredible 24 touchdown passes against just two interceptions. Last weekend, Harrell threw for 338 yards and five touchdowns on 26-of-40 pass attempts in a lopsided win over Northwestern State. As a team, TTU rolled up 628 yards of total offense, including 534 via the pass. Michael Crabtree continued his tremendous rookie campaign, as he pulled down eight balls for 145 yards and three scores in the win last weekend. He has already caught a school-record 14 touchdowns this season, and that ties him with three other players for the Division I freshman record for receiving touchdowns in a year. If that weren't enough, he also leads the team with 60 catches and 920 receiving yards in just five games. Danny Amendola is another weapon in this passing game, as he has recorded 44 catches for 593 yards and three scores thus far.

Defensively, the Red Raiders haven't been that great this season and that is why Ruffin McNeill was named interim defensive coordinator following the team's loss to Oklahoma State on September 22nd. Leading the charge last weekend, McNeill's defense limited Northwestern State to just seven points and only 118 total yards of offense. This unit, which is giving up 24.0 ppg and 348.0 total ypg, will surely be put to a much tougher test this weekend by ISU. For the year, Paul Williams leads this defense with 34 stops and he also has a one of the team's 12 sacks to his credit.

TTU has been unstoppable on the offensive side of the ball thus far and it is unlikely things will change this weekend. The Red Raiders' passing attack should have another big day, as they cruise past ISU at home.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas Tech 45, Iowa State 21
