GAME NOTES: One of just three unbeaten teams in ACC play, the 13th-ranked Clemson Tiger invade Atlanta to battle the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in a crucial ACC contest. Tommy Bowden's squad is 2-0 in league play and sits just a half game behind Boston College (3-0) in the Atlantic Division standings. The Tigers have looked impressive in 2007, including last week's 42-20 rout of NC State in Raleigh. The Yellow Jackets find themselves at the opposite end of the conference spectrum, still searching for their first league win. Chan Gailey's team is 0-2 in the Coastal Division standings and is coming off back- to-back losses to Boston College (24-10) and most recently, Virginia (28-23). Nine of the last 11 meetings between these two teams have been decided by five points or less. Georgia Tech leads the all-time series, 45-24-2, but Clemson posted a 31-7 win last year in Death Valley.
One of the most potent offensive teams in the ACC this year, Clemson is averaging 445.0 yards of offense per game. It is a pick-your-poison with the Tigers, who have the ability to move the ball both via the run (179.0 ypg) and via the pass (266.0 ypg). The ground game was a given this season, what with talented backs like James Davis and C.J. Spiller. Davis is averaging nearly seven yards per carry this year (6.8) and paces the team with 394 yards and four TDs. Spiller started slow, but has come on a bit, with 4.2 yards per carry and one TD. The biggest surprise in 2007 has been the play of Cullen Harper under center. The 6-4 junior has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes thus far, for 964 yards, with 12 TDs and no interceptions. Wide receiver Aaron Kelly has clearly been the go-to-guy downfield, with 22 receptions, for 289 yards and three TDs.
The Clemson defense has been a pleasant surprise as well, with the team yielding a mere 315.3 yards pf total offense per game. The rush defense could use some tweaking at 145.5 yards per game, but the pass defense has been top- notch (169.8 ypg). The team has forced nine turnovers in the first four games, including six interceptions. In addition, the defense has registered eight sacks and 29 TFLs. Leading the charge has been linebacker Nick Watkins, who paces the team with 39 total tackles. He is flanked by fellow LBs Tramaine Billie (24 tackles) and Cortney Vincent (24 tackles), to form a solid LB corps. Defensive end Phillip Merling (26 tackles, five TFLs, one sack) is the busiest of the downlineman, while safeties Michael Hamlin (22 tackles) and Chris Clemons (22 tackles) lead the way in the secondary.
The Tech offense is a bit one-dimensional this year, and that one dimension is not clicking right now. A solid running team thanks to the exploits of All-ACC tailback Tashard Choice, the Yellow Jackets are netting 208.0 yards per game on the ground. However, Choice, who has rushed for 356 yards and four TDs this year, left last week's game against Virginia with an injured hamstring and is listed as questionable for this week's contest. That being the case, expect more from freshman Jonathan Dwyer, who has made an immediate impact this year, having rushed for 256 yards (6.7 ypc) and six TDs in the first four games. Quarterback Taylor Bennett has completed just 50 percent of his passes thus far, and has just one TD pass and one INT. Wideouts Greg Davis (14 receptions, for 181 yards) and Demaryius Thomas (11 receptions, for 175 yards and one TD) are the best options in the passing game.
The Georgia Tech defense has been inconsistent this season, but a struggling offense has a lot to do with that. Still, this is a unit that has failed to halt drives when it needs to the most. Opponents have scored on 7-of-9 red zone chances this year, with five TDs. While the team has fared well against the run (72.2 ypg), the pass has provided problems (238.5 ypg). The team has been able to get pressure on QBs this year, with 15 sacks in the first four games. Leading the way in that category is DT Vance Walker (16 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 3.5 sacks) and DE Darrell Robertson (17 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks). Senior safety Jamal Lewis (team-high 26 tackles) headlines the play in the secondary, while senior LB Phillip Wheeler (23 tackles, two sacks) does the same in the middle of the field.
On its own field, Georgia Tech should be able to keep this game close. However, the Tigers will pound the ball with James Davis and C.J. Spiller, allowing opportunities for Cullen Harper downfield. Clemson should make enough plays on both sides of the ball to get the victory.
