GAME NOTES: The Texas Tech Red Raiders try to make it six wins in a row this Saturday, as they open up their Big 12 schedule against the Oklahoma State Cowboys from Boone Pickens Stadium. The Raiders enter the game on a roll, as they have won three straight contests to open the 2007 season. All three wins have come against Conference USA opponents, including a 59-24 pounding of Rice last weekend. That marked the team's fifth win in a row dating back to the end of last season. Texas Tech now turns its attention to Big 12 play, where it posted an even 4-4 ledger a year ago. As for OSU, it has had a rather tough start to the season, losing two of its first three games. Following a 42-6 victory over Florida Atlantic, the Cowboys were embarrassed at Troy, 41-23, on September 14th. OSU now heads into Big 12 action, where it has gone just 3-8 in its 11 previous openers. As far as the all-time series is concerned, TTU owns a 20-11-3 advantage over OSU. The Red Raiders posted a 30-24 victory over the Cowboys last season and that triumph was the start of their current winning streak.
To no surprise, the Red Raiders rank as one of the top offensive units in the nation after three weeks, as they are currently averaging a whopping 51.0 ppg and an impressive 568.67 total ypg. TTU has become well known for its spread offense and that is the main reason why the team is averaging a healthy 479.3 passing ypg. Last weekend, the Raiders rolled up 592 yards of total offense, including 481 via the pass, in a 59-24 victory over Rice. Graham Harrell had yet another spectacular performance under center, as he threw for 414 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in the win. Harrell, who has thrown for 1,317 yards and 14 touchdowns thus far, completed 28-of-37 pass attempts with just one interception. His main target was freshman Michael Crabtree, who pulled down 11 balls for 244 yards and three touchdowns. In just three collegiate games, Crabtree has already racked up 38 catches, 538 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Defensively, TTU is allowing 21.3 ppg and 337.3 total ypg to its opponents and that isn't all too bad considering the potency of this team's offense. The defense has been especially tough against the pass, yielding just 194.3 ypg through the air thus far. Last weekend, the Raiders limited Rice to 311 yards of total offense, while forcing three turnovers. The defense also recorded six sacks, giving it 10 for the year. Paul Williams posted 10 tackles and a sack last weekend and he now leads the club with 24 stops on the season.
Through three games, the Cowboys have done a solid job on offense, although this unit still hasn't reached its potential. OSU, which posted 35.2 ppg and 409.8 total ypg in '06, is averaging a respectable 26.3 ppg and a solid 395.3 total ypg thus far. In last week's game, the Cowboys rolled up 432 yards of total offense, including 241 on the ground, but it wasn't enough to overcome five costly turnovers in a 41-23 loss to Troy. Zac Robinson accounted for two of those turnovers on interceptions and he completed just 18-of-37 pass attempts in the losing cause. It was the first career start by Robinson, who threw for 191 yards and a touchdown as well. On the season, Robinson has completed 56.9 percent of his throws with four touchdowns against three interceptions. Adarius Bowman has provided Robinson with an open target and he leads the team with 17 catches, 257 receiving yards and three scores. Last week, Bowman pulled down seven balls for 57 yards. As for the ground game, it was paced by Kendall Hunter, who went for 125 yards on 16 carries in the loss to Troy. He has done a nice job filling in for starting tailback Dantrell Savage, who has played in just one game this season due to a groin injury. Savage, the team's leading rusher in '06, is listed as questionable for this weekend's game.
On the defensive side of the ball is where the Cowboys have struggled this season, allowing their opponents to score 27.3 ppg and rack up 380.3 total ypg. The team has struggled against the pass, giving up 265.7 ypg, and that was evident last weekend, when it surrendered 388 passing yards to Troy. The team gave up a poor 174 yards on the ground in the loss as well. The Cowboys did create two turnovers in the game, but they have forced just four miscues through three games. Chris Collins paced the team in defeat with 13 tackles and a forced fumble, and he now leads the team with 26 stops on the year.
This should be a high scoring affair, as both teams possess a potent offense. TTU however, is playing with more confidence at the moment and it should be able to throw all over OSU's suspect pass defense en route to the victory.
