GAME NOTES: The 21st-ranked Kentucky Wildcats are coming off one of the biggest wins in program history, and they will attempt to carry the momentum into this weekend's SEC clash with the Arkansas Razorbacks. Kentucky has earned a spot in the AP poll for the first time since the 1984 season, thanks largely to a 40-34 victory over rival Louisville last Saturday. That victory marked the program's first triumph over a top-10 team in 30 years. The 3-0 start for the Wildcats is their best since winning four in a row to start the 2002 campaign. Arkansas opened the season with a 46-26 victory over a solid Troy squad. After a week off, the Razorbacks returned to action last Saturday against Alabama. In what turned out to be a tremendous matchup, the Hogs dropped a heart-breaking 41-38 decision, and they hope that four straight home games will be just the remedy needed to get over the painful setback. Kentucky and Arkansas have met on four previous occasions, and each team has two victories in the series. These squads are meeting for the first time since an unforgettable 2003 battle that required seven overtime periods to decide the outcome.
Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson is no longer simply a player or even a standout. The signal caller is a major star, and he proved so last week against Louisville. Playing against an opponent that has embarrassed his 'Cats in recent years, Woodson connected on 30-of-44 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Kentucky trailed in the final minute of the tilt when Woodson tossed a 57-yard touchdown pass to Steve Johnson. In the win, Woodson became the SEC's all-time leader in consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 257 and now needs to add just 14 more to that total to reach the NCAA all- time mark. He was also named SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Kentucky is racking up 48.7 ppg and 504.0 ypg thanks to a balanced attack which features over 245 ypg both on the ground and through the air. Woodson has completed 68.4 percent of his passes and has thrown nine touchdowns. His top receiver, Kenan Burton, has a sprained ankle that puts his status for this weekend into question. As for the ground attack, versatile tailback Rafael Little has posted 388 yards on only 52 carries to lead the way.
As expected, the Kentucky defense had a hard time slowing down Louisville. In fact, it is hard to give the Wildcat defenders much credit at all for the big victory. The Cardinals were able to rack up 34 points and 467 total yards, including 366 yards through the air. On a positive note, Kentucky did come up with a pair of takeaways, an obvious key to the win. Three sacks also helped the cause. Despite the shaky effort against Louisville, the Wildcats are still allowing a modest average of 21.3 ppg and 374.0 total ypg. Stopping the run has proven to be a bit problematic, as the club is permitting foes to gain 4.8 ypc and 185.0 ypg on the ground. The pass defense has been better, as the 'Cats have intercepted five balls while allowing four passing scores. Wesley Woodyard has posted 33 total tackles, more than twice the total of his closest teammate.
Arkansas was held scoreless for the first quarter-and-a-half in the Alabama game last weekend. The offense did wake up, however, and 38 points are usually enough to earn a victory. The Hogs ran for 301 yards on 53 attempts, and it doesn't hurt matters that they possess the nation's elite tailback in Darren McFadden. A player who can do it all, McFadden ran for 195 yards on 33 carries and reached the end zone twice. He suffered a concussion in the tilt but figures to be ready to go this week. Fellow tailback Felix Jones added 96 yards on 16 carries, and he shines as a kick returner as well. Quarterback Casey Dick only completed 11-of-23 passes and was intercepted once, as he has yet to prove that he is capable of providing a consistent passing attack for Arkansas. A lackluster receiving corps doesn't help matters. Despite being rather one dimensional offensively, Arkansas is racking up 42.0 ppg and 478.5 total ypg. Of that impressive yardage total, 325.5 ypg come on the ground. McFadden has rushed for 346 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 6.1 ypc. As for Jones, a big-play threat, he has 237 yards on only 28 carries. Dick has barely completed 50 percent of his passes, and no receiver has emerged as a threat.
The Arkansas defensive unit simply did not get the job done against Alabama. The Razorbacks were victimized for three touchdowns in the first quarter alone, two of which were the result of drives spanning at least 74 yards. In all, the Hogs yielded five touchdowns to the Alabama offense, including the game winner with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Razorbacks are yielding 33.5 ppg through two outings, and opponents are gaining 413.0 total ypg of offense. They are surrendering 4.4 yards per rushing attempt, so there is certainly some room for improvement in that area. As for the pass defense, the squad has only permitted 41-of-94 throws to be completed. On a down note, the opposition is averaging 13.2 yards per completion.
Expect plenty of offense in this showdown, as Woodson and McFadden very well could be Heisman finalists at season's end. Although Kentucky is on a roll and plenty with a wealth of confidence, expect the Hogs to pull out a narrow victory in front of the home crowd.
