GAME NOTES: Sitting atop the ACC Coastal Division standings, the Virginia Cavaliers attempt to remain perfect in league play, as they welcome the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Scott Stadium for a key intra-divisional showdown this weekend. Al Groh's Cavaliers escaped Chapel Hill last weekend with a thrilling 22-20 victory, moving the team to 2-0 in ACC play. The team opened the 2007 season with a 23-3 loss at Wyoming, but rebounded the next week with a 24-13 home win against Duke. The Yellow Jackets were riding high with a top-25 ranking last week. Chan Gailey's troops opened the season with a rather easy victory at Notre Dame (33-3), followed by a 69-14 romp over Samford. However, the good times and the national ranking evaporated last weekend, with a 24-10 setback to Boston College. This is the 30th all-time meeting between these two teams with the series knotted up at 14-14-1. Virginia has won three of the last four matchups, but it was Tech with the victory last season, a 24-7 decision in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind early and despite rallying with 10 points in the fourth quarter, were unable to overcome the Eagles last weekend. After strong showings against both Notre Dame and Samford, Georgia Tech managed just 267 yards of total offense against BC, including a surprisingly low 63 yards rushing. If the Yellow Jackets are to vie for a conference crown this season they must get more production from the ground game. Tailback Tashard Choice finished with just 31 yards rushing last week, but is still regarded as one of the top rushers in not only the ACC, but the nation for that matter. Despite the subpar game, Choice is still averaging 6.5 yards per carry on the year and leads a rushing attack that is netting a hefty 237.0 yards per game. Tech's quarterback Taylor Bennett hasn't done much, throwing for just 410 yards in the first three games. He has yet to throw a TD pass, or an interception. The loss of All-World WR Calvin Johnson is evident, as no one has really been a consistent threat downfield in the passing game. Greg Smith currently leads the team in both receptions (9) and receiving yards (102).
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets fell victim to the Preseason ACC Player of the Year last weekend, as BC quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 435 yards and one TD. That certainly has skewed the numbers for the season, with Tech now giving up a generous 240.3 yards passing per game. The rush defense on the other hand has been top-notch, yielding just 56.0 yards per game, on 1.6 yards per carry. This is a defense that likes to get upfield and make plays, as evidenced by the team's 13 sacks in the first three games. The team has yet to record an interception, but does have six fumble recoveries to its credit. Defensive end Darrell Robertson is tied for the team-lead in tackles (15) with linebacker Gary Guyton, and also paces the team in TFLs (6.5) and sacks (2.5). Talented senior LB Phillip Wheeler (14 tackles) is right behind and is an emotional leader for the Yellow Jackets in the middle of the field.
The Cavaliers are looking to go 3-0 to start conference play for the first time in four years, following last week's two-point win over North Carolina. Despite the solid start, Virginia's offense has yet to get on track. The team is averaging just 16.3 ppg this year, earning modest gains on both the ground (109.0 ypg) and through the air (149.0 ypg). After a promising freshman season, QB Jameel Sewell has struggled a bit this year, throwing for just 81 yards per game, with one TD and two INTs. The rushing attack has been a bit more consistent, thanks to tailback Cedric Peerman, who is netting just over six yards per carry and 113.7 yards rushing per game. There hasn't been a whole lot of production from the vertical game, with senior TE Tom Santi pacing the team with 11 receptions, for 77 yards and two scores.
The Virginia defense has been solid for the most part, yielding just 18.7 ppg. The strength of the unit is up front, with the play of the downlinemen. Sophomore DE Jeffrey Fitzgerald has been outstanding in the early stages of the season and leads the team in tackles with 22 stops. Fitzgerald also has three TFLs, one sack and an interception to his credit. Of course, his job is made a bit easier thanks to the play of All-American candidate Chris Long on the other side. The 6-4, 280-pound senior has played lights out thus far. Long ranks third on the team in tackles (19), leads the team in TFLs (six) and is responsible for half (5) of the team's sack total (10), along with amassing nine QB hurries. Junior LB Jon Copper adds to the strong play amongst the front seven, with 21 total tackles.
The Cavaliers have won seven straight over Georgia Tech at home and know what it takes to win in-conference on their own field. Tech will need to establish the run early against Virginia, but the Cavs' defense will make that awfully hard to do.
