GAME NOTES: The third-ranked Florida Gators appear to be invincible, and they hit the road this weekend for an SEC clash with the Ole Miss Rebels. Florida sent a message to the rest of the college football world by absolutely destroying Tennessee last weekend by a 59-20 final. The Gators are now 3-0, and their smallest margin of victory has been 28 points. With a number of tough opponents ahead on the SEC schedule, including LSU, Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina, we will find out just how good this young group of Gators really is in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see them in action on the road for the first time this season. Ole Miss began the season with a victory, but the club has dropped back-to-back decisions since. The Rebels opened SEC play last weekend with a 31-17 loss to Vanderbilt, and things don't get any easier this weekend. In fact, Ole Miss is a huge underdog despite the home field advantage. Ole Miss holds an 11-9-1 series edge over Florida, including two straight wins over the Gators.
The Florida offense was not responsible for all 59 points against Tennessee, as the club scored a touchdown on special teams and one on defense. Still, the effort of the Gator offense was nothing short of spectacular. The unit racked up 554 total yards, including over 250 yards both rushing and passing. Sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow did nothing to hurt his Heisman hopes, as he threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores. He threw for 299 yards on only 14 completions and appears to be in complete control of Urban Meyer's offense. Percy Harvin, the team's multi-talented weapon, ran the ball nine times for 75 yards and one touchdown, while also recording four catches for 120 yards. Florida is averaging 55.7 ppg and 521.3 total ypg, staggering numbers by any standards. The Gators have scored 21 offensive touchdowns in three games, and Tebow has eight passing scores to go along with five on the ground. He is completing 73.8 percent of his passes and has been intercepted only once.
Defensively, Florida dominated Tennessee. The Vols scored two touchdowns on the day, but only one was generated by the club's offense. The Gators yielded a mere 37 rushing yards on 21 attempts and came up with two key interceptions. May of Tennessee's 261 passing yards came long after the outcome of the tilt had been determined. Opponents are averaging 18.0 ppg and 279.3 total ypg against the Gators, who have been outstanding defensively despite losing almost every key contributor from last year's defense. Their play against the run thus far has been phenomenal, as they are holding foes to 46.0 ypg on the ground and 1.7 ypc. Brandon Spikes tops the club in tackles with 29, and he has made 2.5 stops for loss.
Ole Miss attempted to establish the run against Vanderbilt last weekend, but that effort was not rewarded with positive results. The Rebels finished with 54 rushing yards on 32 attempts, an average of 1.7 ypc. It certainly didn't help matters that 32 yards were lost on the six quarterback sacks that Ole Miss surrendered. Mike Wallace certainly came to play for the Rebels, as he caught a pair of touchdown passes. First, Wallace hauled in a 36-yard strike from Seth Adams, and then later was on the receiving end of a 54-yard Brent Shaeffer pass. Wallace finished with four grabs for 139 yards, but the 17 points that his squad mustered won't get it done in SEC play. Simply put, Ole Miss is a mediocre offensive team that is averaging 21.7 ppg and 357.0 total ypg. BenJarvus Green-Ellis is an underrated back who has rushed for 371 yards in three games. Adams has been solid, having completed 59.1 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and two interceptions, and Wallace is clearly the most dangerous target on the outside. Adams did, however, injure his shoulder in the last game and his status for this weekend is questionable.
Vanderbilt was able to post 25 first downs and 383 total yards against the Rebels last weekend. Ole Miss permitted a respectable 3.7 yards per rushing attempt, but Vandy still finished with 183 yards on the ground because of 49 attempts. The Rebels also permitted 18-of-26 passes to be completed for 200 yards without an interception. They had two sacks, but those plays did little to overshadow a lackluster overall defensive effort. There is plenty of room for improvement for the Ole Miss defense, as the team is yielding 30.0 ppg and 466.0 total ypg. The Rebels are giving up 291.0 ypg through the air despite allowing less than 10 yards per pass completion. Jamarca Sanford tops the Rebels with 33 total tackles, one more than teammate Ashlee Palmer. Greg Hardy has recorded six TFLs, including three sacks.
Don't expect this game to be close, as Florida figures to score at will. At this point, it appears that the Gators have what it takes to make another serious run at college football's top prize.
