GAME NOTES: The Kansas Jayhawks will try for their third consecutive victory of the season when they host the Toledo Rockets this Saturday evening from the Memorial Stadium. The Rockets have a been a dud in the first two weeks of the season, losing back-to-back games to Purdue (52-24) and Central Michigan (52-31). Fortunately for the Rockets they will have the luxury of hosting their next three contests. As for the Jayhawks, they have had much more success in the beginning of their season. Kansas opened the 2007 campaign with a commanding 52-7 victory over Central Michigan. The Jayhawks followed that win with a tremendous 62-0 performance against SE Louisiana this past weekend. Including this matchup with Toledo, the Jayhawks will host three of their next four contests. Last season Toledo posted an exciting, 37-31 double-overtime victory over the Jayhawks and now have a slim 2-1 edge in the all-time series.
Although the Rockets are winless to start the season, the team's problems are not on the offensive end of the field. Toledo is averaging a solid 27.5 ppg, while producing an impressive 404 total ypg. The passing attack has been the main source of offense, as the Rockets are posting 267.5 ypg. Aaron Opelt has only completed 51.5 percent of his passes, but the signal caller does have 403 passing yards thus far to go along with two TDs. In the loss to Central Michigan, Opelt had a tremendous outing, throwing for 334 yards and two scores. The QB was sacked twice in the loss and completed just 25-of-41 attempts. Stephen Williams led the way for Toledo with six catches for 157 yards and one score. On the season the wide out has 10 receptions for 215 yards and one score. The ground game has not had the same success, as the team is averaging just 136.5 ypg. Jalen Parmele has been the best option, as the tailback is posting 79.5 ypg.
This defense unit has been atrocious in every aspect of the game, and heads into this matchup surrendering 52 ppg on a whopping 475 total ypg. The unit has struggled against both the run and the pass, as opponents are allowing 231 yards on the ground and 244 yards through the air. Toledo has already surrendered 53 first downs and has allowed opponents to convert on an eye- popping 10-of-11 redzone chances. In the setback to CMU, the Rockets were abused on the ground (218 yards) as well as through the air (244), and surrendered a total of 28 first downs. The defense was unable to force a turnover in the game and also finished with zero sacks. The defense also struggled inside its own 20-yard line, allowing CMU to convert on all eight of its redzone chances. Greg Hay led the way with nine tackles in the game and now has 11.5 stops on the season.
In the first two contests of the season Kansas has been a very potent offensive unit, averaging 57 ppg, while producing a whopping 519.5 total yards per outing. The Jayhawks have put forth an extremely balanced attack, rushing for 225.5 ypg, while passing for 294 ypg. In the recent win over SE Louisiana, the Jayhawks used 501 total yards en route to a 62 point victory. As a team the Jayhawks rushed for 221 yards, and the main contributor was Brandon McAnderson who ran for 60 yards and two scores. On the year McAnderon is leading the squad with 170 yards and two touchdowns. The passing attack was also extremely effective in the win over SE Louisiana, as Todd Reesing threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus Henry was the main target, as the wideout grabbed five passes for 119 yards. On the season Reesing has done a solid job completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 518 yards and six scores.
While the offense has cause havoc for opposing defense's the defensive unit for Kansas has dominated its first two opponents. Thus far the Jayhawks are surrendering just 184.5 total yards per game and the best aspect of this unit is its ability to stop the run, as Kansas is holding the opposition to only 41.5 ypg. In the victory over SE Louisiana the Jayhawks held the Lions to a negative 36 yards on the ground. Overall the defense surrendered just 75 total yards and only eight first downs. The Jayhawks did not force a turnover in the contest, but did record four sacks and held SE Louisiana to just 5-of-18 on third down attempts. Joe Mortensen had a solid outing, as the linebacker finished with nine tackles and 3.5 TFLs. Mortensen has been tremendous thus far, and heads into this weekend with team highs in tackles (17) and TFLs (5.5).
If it is true that numbers do not lie, then the Rockets are in a world of trouble this weekend. Toledo has been horrible throughout the season defensively and at the same time Kansas has been one of the more proficient offensive teams in the nation. All that adds up to a huge victory for the Jayhawks.
