GAME NOTES: Bobby Bowden's Florida State Seminoles opened the 2007 in the top-25, but now find themselves on the outside of the national polls looking in, as they attempt to bounce back from a 24-18 season-opening loss to ACC rival Clemson. Bowden has now dropped three straight to his son Tommy Bowden and has watched his team land in an early-season hole. The Seminoles get their chance to dig their way out this weekend, as the begin the home portion of their 2007 campaign, inviting the UAB Blazers to Doak Campbell Stadium. This is the second straight high-profile program for Neil Callaway's team, as the coaching debut of Callaway was not a memorable one, with a 55-18 pasting at the hands of Michigan State last weekend. Florida State has won both prior meetings with UAB and this will be the third time these teams have met since 2001. All three outings have taken place in Tallahassee.
UAB is an inexperienced team and it showed in week one, as the Blazers amassed just 226 yards of total offense at Michigan State. It was the rushing game that was particularly disappointing, accounting for just 12 total yards on 32 carries. Senior quarterback Sam Hunt did his best to move the chains against the Spartans, completing 21-of-39 passes, for 214 yards with one TD and one INT. Sophomore QB Joe Webb was the only other bright spot in an otherwise dismal offensive performance, as the versatile player lined up at wide receiver and hauled in six balls, for 98 yards and the one TD, leading both teams in catches. Still, the Blazers must do a better job on third downs, converting just 8-of-20 attempts against MSU. Protecting the quarterback is another area of concern, as UAB yielded five sacks in the season-opener.
There certainly isn't many defensive positives to be taken from the loss in East Lansing last weekend. The Spartans had their way with the Blazers both on the ground and through the air, accumulating nearly 600 yards of total offense (593), with great balance. The rush defense was porous for UAB, giving way to 6.2 yards per carry and 298 yards in all. The pass defense wasn't any better (295 yards). The defense was able to record nine TFLs in the game and one sack. Junior linebacker Joe Henderson led the way with 12 tackles and the lone sack. Junior free safety Matt Taylor, freshman middle linebacker Mike Tashman and senior strong safety Durrell Fuqua finished second in tackles, with eight stops apiece.
The Seminoles spotted Clemson a 24-3 lead and managed just 62 yards and one first down in the first half. However, the team did some nice things on offense over the final 30 minutes to make a game of it. The overall numbers certainly weren't good, with FSU amassing just 256 yards of total offense, with a mere 142 yards coming via the pass. One bright spot had to be the play of tailback Antone Smith, who rumbled for 90 yards and one TD on 14 carries. The 5-9 junior seemed to get stronger as the game wore on and was instrumental in FSU's late-game comeback. Quarterback Drew Weatherford played to mixed reviews against a stingy Clemson defense, completing 17-of-34 passes, for 142 yards and one TD. Smith was not only the leading rusher, but also the top receiving threat in the game, catching five balls, for 57 yards. Talented WR De'Cody Fagg, was unable to create any spark downfield, as the Tigers neutralized him and allowed him to record just two receptions, for 11 yards.
Much like the offense, it was a tale of two halfs for the Florida State defense, as the unit could do little right in the first half and shut out the Tigers in the second stanza. In all, the numbers were encouraging for the defense, as FSU allowed just 292 yards of total offense, while forcing nine punts. All-American safety Myron Rolle got his sophomore season off on a strong note, tying junior linebacker Geno Hayes for the team-lead in tackles with eight. Senior safety Roger Williams and freshman tackle Budd Thacker were right behind with seven stops apiece. Florida State recorded just one turnover (fumble recovery) and recorded five TFLs and two sacks in the game.
The Blazers are in for a long afternoon, as Florida State has to be disappointed with the outcome of last week's Bowden Bowl in Death Valley. The Seminoles will undoubtedly take out their frustrations on UAB, which could be in for its second straight lopsided defeat.
