Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Michael Bishop completed 20-of-27 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders edged the Calgary Stampeders, 37-34, in a matchup of top Western Conference teams.
Both teams now boast records of 9-5, and clinched playoff spots thanks to British Columbia's victory over Toronto earlier Friday. BC is tied with Calgary and Saskatchewan atop the conference.
Weston Dressler caught seven passes for 128 yards for the Roughriders, while Chris Getzlaf had five catches for 47 yards and a score. Neal Hughes ran for two scores and 29 yards on nine carries.
Henry Burris threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns on 29-of-45 passing, and was intercepted once, for Calgary. Burris also ran 13 times for 44 yards and a TD. Ken-Yon Rambo had 12 catches for 94 yards and a score, while Ryan Thelwell had a receiving score.
The Roughriders entered the fourth quarter with a 27-24 advantage, but the Stampeders quickly tied the game. Sandro DeAngelis booted a 30-yard field goal less than two minutes in.
But Hughes capped a Saskatchewan drive just short of the midway point of the fourth with a one-yard run. The extra point, and a Luca Congi field goal with 2:22 remaining in the game gave the Riders a 37-27 cushion.
Calgary's quick-strike offense drew the team back in the game, as Burris found Thelwell for a 33-yard TD with a little over a minute left. But the Stampeders drew no closer as Saskatchewan held on for the win.
A 25-yard field goal from DeAngelis opened the scoring, and the teams traded touchdowns in the latter stages of the first quarter. Saskatchewan struck first, as Hughes plowed into the end zone from four yards out with six minutes left, but Burris' one-yard TD run put Calgary back on top. A single from DeAngelis gave the Stampeders an 11-7 edge after the opening frame.
Congi's 47-yard kick, and a nine-yard TD throw from Bishop to Getzlaf thrust the Roughriders back in front, 17-11, a little more than five minutes into the second quarter.
Burris, though, completed a 19-yard TD pass to Rambo, to give Calgary the lead again. A 33-yard field goal from Congi and 14-yarder from DeAngelis with 14 seconds left in the half gave Calgary a 21-20 lead at the break.
Saskatchewan caught a break in the third quarter when Burris fumbled in the first minute on a sack. Kitwana Jones recovered and ran it back 15 yards into the end zone.
DeAngelis' 39-yard field goal gave the Stampeders three more points, but the Roughriders still held a three-point edge going into the final stanza.
