Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Jarious Jackson threw for 340 yards and five touchdowns while Geroy Simon racked up 192 receiving yards on seven catches, two for touchdowns, as the British Columbia Lions dominated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers en route to a 42-24 victory.
Stefan Logan ran for 140 yards on 18 attempts while Clarence Coleman caught two passes, both for touchdowns. Jason Clermont caught three balls for 71 yards and the Lions (1-2) picked up their first win of the season.
Kevin Glenn struggled mightily for the Bombers with two interceptions, connecting on 9-of-17 passes for 86 yards before being replaced by Ryan Dinwiddie, who completed 20-of-33 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. He had two picks but also scored on a one-yard touchdown run.
Derick Armstrong had six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown while Kerry Johnson had 10 catches for 79 yards. B.C.'s defense bottled up Winnipeg running back Charles Roberts, who gained just 23 yards on eight attempts. The Bombers (0-3) remain the league's only winless team.
The Lions took the field with a heavy heart following the death Sunday of club president Bob Ackles. Ackles died of a heart attack. He was 69. The Lions wore an orange paw on their helmets with Ackles' first name in the middle and will for the remainder of the season to honor his memory. Ackles began his career with B.C. as the club's water boy before working his way up the organization to become the team's general manager.
Winnipeg got on the board first with a 48-yard field goal from Alexis Serna but British Columbia capped an eight-play 75-yard drive with a 12-yard strike to Coleman from Jackson at the 8:31 mark of the first quarter. Paul McCallum converted on the kick and the Lions had a 7-3 lead.
McCallum added a 32-yard field goal after Javier Glatt intercepted Glenn's first pass attempt of Winnipeg's ensuing possession. McCallum then conceded a safety after B.C.'s Gavin Walls sacked Jackson for an 11-yard loss and the score was 10-5 after one quarter.
B.C. opened the second stanza by finishing off a nine-play 51-yard drive, capped by a 37-yard McCallum field goal. After a three-and-out from Winnipeg, the Lions put together a quick scoring drive. Simon caught two passes for 66 yards and Jackson found running back Rolly Lumbala for a one-yard touchdown toss. McCallum converted the kick, making it a 20-5 game.
Glatt's second interception of Glenn halted the Blue Bombers next drive but the Lions' Logan coughed up the ball on B.C.'s ensuing possession. The two teams hit a dry patch offensively before McCallum added a single with 16 seconds remaining to give the Lions a 21-5 halftime advantage.
Jackson came out firing in the second half, connecting with Simon on a 76-yard touchdown on the Lions first play from scrimmage. McCallum converted the kick and the lead was 28-5.
After yet another three-and-out from the stagnant Winnipeg offense, Jackson found Simon in the endzone again for a three-yard strike. A 36-yard pass to Clermont set up the score.
Dinwiddie replaced an ineffective Glenn at quarterback for the Blue Bombers but the result was the same. Dinwiddie had his third pass intercepted by Reggie Myles before Jackson gave it right back with a pick of his own. Dinwiddie then settled down going 4-for-6 on a seven-play 80-yard drive capped with a 35-yard field goal form Serna at the 5:56 mark of the third quarter.
Winnipeg, however, had no answer for the Lion offense as Logan rattled off a 66-yard run on the very next possession, setting up a nine-yard touchdown pass to Coleman in a quick 1:09 scoring drive.
Dinwiddie then led the Blue Bombers to their first meaningful scoring drive, going 71 yards in 12 plays, opening the fourth quarter scoring with a seven- yard touchdown pass from Dinwiddie to Armstrong. Winnipeg's first touchdown, followed by Serna's kick, made the score 42-15.
Winnipeg picked up another conceded safety from B.C. but just couldn't muster enough offense in the end. Dinwiddie found the end zone on a one-yard run with 1:21 remaining but it was too little, too late for the Blue Bombers.
