Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Tristan Jackson returned an interception for a touchdown and minutes later returned a punt for another score to lead the Edmonton Eskimos to a 47-28 win over the Toronto Argonauts.
Ricky Ray completed 16-of-23 passes for 213 yards with a touchdown for Edmonton (2-1), which will visit these Argos next Sunday. A.J. Harris rushed 14 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns while Jason Tucker caught a touchdown pass in the victory.
Kerry Joseph threw for 227 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for Toronto (1-2), which had not allowed a passing touchdown yet this season prior to this game. Michael Bishop also passed for 89 yards and a score.
Arland Bruce caught two touchdowns in the losing effort.
Toronto grabbed a 15-9 lead on a tremendous 17-yard catch by Bruce in the middle of the second quarter. Joseph threw a soft fade pass toward the left side of the end zone and both Bruce and Edmonton cornerback Jonte Buhl went up for the ball. As he was falling down, Bruce somehow corralled the ball, kept it from hitting the ground by using his shoulder pads, and landed on his back with the ball in his hands. The play was reviewed and upheld as a touchdown.
However, a 24-yard TD run by Harris gave the lead to Edmonton with 3:01 to go in the first half. Harris took the handoff and the play was designed as a dive up the middle, but Harris cut back up the right side and ran over two defenders before he plunged across the goal line for a touchdown and a 16-15 lead at the intermission.
Two quick touchdowns for Edmonton opened the scoring in the third and put the hosts in the driver's seat. After an 89-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jackson, he followed that with another long run to make it 30-15 when he returned a punt 61 yards for a score.
Later in the third quarter, with 8:08 on the clock, Bishop connected with Johnnie Morant for a 52-yard touchdown -- the pass was momentarily in the hands of a defender but Morant grabbed it back -- and then a 31-yard boot by Mike Vanderjagt brought Toronto within 30-25.
The teams traded field goals early in the fourth quarter before the Eskimos put the game away with a pair of late touchdowns.
First, a 6-yard scoring strike from Ray to Tucker made it 39-28. Tucker faked his usual corner route to shed the defender and instead ran a post pattern, accepting Ray's pass in the back of the end zone behind the uprights.
A three-yard TD plunge by fullback Mathieu Bertrand capped the scoring.
In the opening quarter, the two teams traded touchdowns. Joseph hooked up with Bruce from four yards out and Harris rumbled two yards over the goal line for a 7-7 tie. Following a Toronto single, Vanderjagt conceded a safety early in the second stanza as the Eskimos held a 9-8 lead.
