CFL Preview - Saskatchewan (2-0) at Hamilton (1-1)
GAME NOTES: The Saskatchewan Roughriders are limping into Ivor Wynne Stadium
-- literally.
The Roughriders will play this game minus starting quarterback Marcus Crandell
(hamstring), receiver D.J. Flick (broken ankle) and cornerback Leron Mitchell
(broken leg). All three were injured in last weekend's 26-16 victory over the
B.C. Lions.
Third-string quarterback Darian Durant will get the start against Hamilton
ahead of backup Stephen Jyles, who came on in relief of Crandell but was
replaced by Durant after throwing two interceptions.
The Riders looked to the trade market to find a replacement for Flick, the
former Ticat who was Saskatchewan's receiving leader last season. The club
acquired receiver T.J. Acree from Toronto for defensive lineman Ron Flemons.
Saskatchewan acquired Flemons originally from Toronto in the deal that sent
quarterback Kerry Joseph to the Argos in the offseason.
Toronto landed Acree in a trade with Edmonton, along with running back Tyler
Ebell, for cornerback Jordan Younger.
Hamilton is coming off a huge performance last week against Toronto. Not only
did the Ticats beat their arch-rivals 32-13, but ran for 311 yards, including
189 yards from tailback Jesse Lumsden.
Quarterback Casey Printers was also an effective player for the Ticats,
completing 16-of-23 passes for 171 yards. He also ran eight times for 32 yards
and two touchdowns.
In fact, all four of Hamilton's touchdowns came on the ground, with Lumsden
also scoring twice.
Hamilton's defense also did a nice job of holding the Argos to 238 total yards
and registering three sacks. By comparison, the Ticats allowed no sacks and
registered no turnovers.
The numbers: Hamilton is 0-1 at home this year and facing a West Division
squad for the first time. Saskatchewan is 1-0 on the road and plays its first
East Division rival.
Keys to the game: Hamilton boasts the CFL's top rushing attack, averaging over
200 yards per game. By comparison, the Roughriders have the league's stingiest
run defense, allowing less than 60 yards per game.
So, it would appear that Hamilton's wild card here could be Printers. The
veteran quarterback has completed 31-of-44 passes (outstanding 70.5 percent
average) but for just 374 yards. While he has yet to throw an interception,
Printers also hasn't found any of his receivers in the end zone, either.
Given Saskatchewan's injury woes on offense, Printers figures to be a pretty
important figure in this game. The Ticats will have to protect Printers, who
has been sacked four times this season, to allow him to look downfield, then
take off to buy more time or make positive gains up field.
Beating the Riders' defense won't be easy. Saskatchewan has allowed a league-
low 29 points in two games and the defensive squad is a big reason why the
defending Grey Cup champions are a gaudy 2-0 under rookie head coach Ken
Miller.
With inexperience at quarterback, running back Wes Cates figures to be
Saskatchewan's top offensive threat. He has 169 yards rushing on 30 carries
for an impressive 5.6-yard average.
Hamilton is flying high following its big win last week, but for the Ticats to
turn the corner they're going to have to prove they're capable of stringing
wins together instead of taking games here and there. Lumsden is leading the
CFL in rushing with 225 yards and a sparkling 7.6-yard average per carry.
If there's a time to hit the defending champions, it would appear that time is
now.
