Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Anthony Nelson scored 18 points to help the Niagara Purple Eagles defeat the Howard Bison, 82-77, at the Glenn Wilkes Classic.
Bilal Benn and Rob Garrison totaled 17 points apiece for Niagara (2-1), which carried a 50-37 lead into halftime. Every Niagara player made at least one field goal in the first 20 minutes.
Calvin Thompson finished with 28 points for Howard (0-3), which closed to within 60-58 with about eight minutes to go in regulation before the Purple Eagles countered with a 14-3 surge to go up 74-61.
Mike Phillips donated 16 points in the loss for the Bison.
Niagara plays Central Florida on Saturday, while Howard battles Georgia State.
