Des Moines, IA (Sports Network) - Klayton Korver drained five three-pointers on his way to 19 points as 20th-ranked Drake bested Wichita State, 73-63, at the Knapp Center.
Adam Emmenecker added 14 points and eight assists for Drake (25-4, 15-3 MVC), which had lost three of five after a 22-1 start. Leonard Houston chipped in with 14 points for the Bulldogs, while Josh Young scored 10 to aid the winning effort.
The win finished off a historic regular season for the Bulldogs, who won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and improved a 14-1 on their home court under first-year head coach Keno Davis. Drake will be the top seed in the Missouri Valley Tournament and will play a quarterfinal game on Friday in St. Louis.
P.J. Couisnard poured in a game-high 20 points for Wichita State (11-19, 4-14), which has dropped five of its last six. Matt Braeuer contributed 16 points for the Shockers, while Ramon Clemente notched a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Drake controlled much of the first half thanks to hot shooting from Korver, who drilled four three-pointers in the session. After the teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes, Korver buried two straight from beyond the arc to give the Bulldogs a 27-18 lead at the midway point.
The Shockers pulled back to within four, 31-27, when Couisnard went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe with 4:17 to play, but the Bulldogs kept Wichita State off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half and headed to intermission leading 34-27.
The Bulldogs sprinted to a double-digit advantage after halftime, using an early 11-2 run to take a 45-31 lead after Josh Parker made 1-of-2 at the line just 3 1/2 minutes into the half.
Wichita State slowly cut into the lead over the next six minutes, finally pulling within seven when Couisnard's three-point play made it a 54-47 game with 10:09 to play.
The teams continued to trade baskets, until Aaron Ellis hit a turnaround hook shot to pull the Shockers within 63-58 at the four minute mark.
Emmenecker answered with a three-point play to give the Bulldogs an eight- point advantage with 3:47 left, then Korver drilled a long three from the left wing to put the Bulldogs up 69-58 inside of two minutes remaining.
Couisnard connected with a three to cut the lead to eight with 1:25 to go, but the Bulldogs iced the game at the free throw line as the Shockers failed to close within single digits again.
