Bowling Green, OH (Sports Network) - Brian Moten poured in 24 points, knocking down 6-of-9 three-pointers, as the Bowling Green Falcons flustered the 23rd- ranked Kent State Golden Flashes, 89-83, in MAC action at Anderson Arena.
Joe Jakubowski added 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and distributed a dozen assists for the Falcons (13-14, 7-7 MAC), who have triumphed in back-to-back outings after a three-game skid. Chris Knight notched 10 points, reeled in nine rebounds and swatted three shots as Bowling Green snapped a four-game losing streak in the series and avenged a 63-49 loss to the Flashes on January 12 in Kent.
Bowling Green has turned away the two ranked opponents to travel to Anderson Arena in the last decade. Back on February 20, 1999, the Falcons earned a 69-58 win over then-No. 25 Miami-Ohio.
Mike Scott tallied 23 points and hauled in nine boards to go with three blocks for Kent State (23-6, 11-3), which saw its six-game win streak erased. Al Fisher contributed 20 points and Chris Singletary scored 16 in the loss, which dropped the Golden Flashes to 7-5 as the visitor.
It was the first game played in the history of Kent State basketball as a nationally ranked squad, and likely the last for now.
Trailing 38-29 at the intermission, the Flashes used an 11-2 barrage early in the second half to close the gap to just one point. Rodriquez Sherman sank a layup to finish the flurry, and Kent State was on the Falcons' heels, 45-44, with 15:14 to play.
However, Bowling Green again had a response. When Ryan Sims buried a bucket from beyond the arc, it commenced a 12-2 burst. Jakubowski's three-pointer with 11:21 to go made it a 60-49 tilt.
Through the bulk of the remainder of the affair, the Falcons maintained the double-digit lead. Each time the Flashes started to chip away, Bowling Green came up with an answer. Kent State came within four points, 87-83, when Fisher hit from beyond the arc, but it was too late, with the clock showing just 20 seconds.
After Bowling Green kicked off the contest with a 9-2 spurt, Kent State earned its first lead of the game when it ripped off a 9-0 run midway through the opening half. Singletary highlighted the burst, netting six points, including the fastbreak dunk that put the Golden Flashes on top 22-21 at the 9:42 mark.
The Falcons fired right back, though, turning a 24-24 deadlock into a double- digit advantage with an 11-0 surge. Jakubowski drained a jumper to spark the scoring streak, which concluded with an Otis Polk foul shot that gave Bowling Green a 35-24 cushion with 1:30 left in the first frame.
Singletary stroked a three-pointer for the Flashes with 23 seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 38-29 heading into the locker room.
