Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jonathan Wallace hit three free throws at the end of regulation to tie the game and scored four of his 20 points in overtime, as 11th-ranked Georgetown pulled out a 70-68 victory over No. 21 Marquette in a Big East thriller at the Bradley Center.
Roy Hibbert also scored 20 points for the Hoyas (24-4, 14-3 Big East), who have won four straight games and moved into sole possession of first place in the Big East. Georgetown has a half-game lead over Louisville, which plays Sunday at home against Villanova. The Hoyas and Cardinals will meet in the regular-season finale next Saturday at the Verizon Center.
Wesley Matthews scored 22 points and Jerel McNeal chipped in 17 for Marquette (21-7, 11-6), which had a five-game winning streak stopped. The Eagles, who will host Florida Gulf Coast in a non-league game on Tuesday before closing the conference schedule at Syracuse next Saturday, are still in the hunt for a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament.
Marquette was in position to win the game in regulation after Matthews hit a pair of free throws for a 63-60 lead, but Wallace was fouled by Dominic James while going up for a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left.
Wallace hit the first two before Marquette called its final timeout. His third attempt bounced off the rim and in to tie it. A desperation shot from near half-court banked hard of the backboard to send the game to overtime.
Marquette scored the first three points of the extra period, but Wallace banked in a three-pointer with just under three minutes to play to tie it. Two free throws by DaJuan Summers with 1:55 remaining put Georgetown in front for good and Hibbert hit one from the stripe with 48 seconds left.
The Eagles worked the ball around for a good shot and a three from the left corner by Matthews drew iron. McNeal grabbed the offensive rebound and scored inside with 17 seconds left to make it a 69-68 game.
Wallace was fouled with nine seconds to play and hit just one free throw, giving Marquette a chance to tie or win it. The Hoyas, though, pressured the ball above the three-point arc and forced a turnover moments before time expired.
Georgetown trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, but chipped away and used a 9-1 run to move ahead. A perfect cut through the lane for a layup by Wallace gave the Hoyas a 56-55 edge with 3 1/2 minutes to play, marking the first Georgetown lead since the first five minutes of the first half.
After a series of free throws left Marquette with a 59-57 lead, Hibbert scored inside with just over a minute left to tie it.
James then missed a three-pointer, but Dwight Burke slammed home the carom while being fouled with 31.6 seconds remaining. He missed the free throw, which proved to be Marquette's undoing throughout the day.
Patrick Ewing Jr. was fouled in the lane with 11.1 seconds to play and hit the first of two free throws before missing the second. Matthews calmly sank two from the stripe for a three-point lead to set up the final sequence of regulation.
Matthews made 8-of-9 from the line, but the remainder of his teammates combined to go 14-of-27. Georgetown finished 21-of-28 from the stripe.
The first half was tightly contested until Matthews and Dan Fitzgerald hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Marquette a 28-20 lead with just under four minutes to play. The Hoyas quickly responded with eight of the next nine points before a three-point play by Matthews sent the Eagles into the break with a 32-28 edge.
Matthews scored 15 first-half points for Marquette, which made just 3-of-10 free throws, while Hibbert led the Hoyas with eight. Georgetown committed 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and made just 3-of-11 three-point tries.
Georgetown scored seven of the first 10 points of the second half to tie the game, but Marquette answered with a 13-2 run.
McNeal scored five straight to break the deadlock before Hibbert countered for the Hoyas. After a free throw by McNeal, James buried a jumper and followed with a three-pointer before two free throws by Burke gave Marquette a 48-37 lead with just over 12 minutes to play.
Back came Georgetown with a 10-2 burst. Wallace canned two from the stripe to cap the run and pull the Hoyas within 50-47 with 8:18 left.
