West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Robbie Hummel poured in 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as 19th-ranked Purdue held on for a 60-54 win over 10th- ranked Michigan State in a Big Ten battle.
E'Twaun Moore added 12 points while Keaton Grant donated 11 points in the win for the Boilermakers (20-5, 11-1), who have won 10 straight.
"It's a great accomplishment for our program," said Purdue coach Matt Painter. "We've come a long way in six weeks. Our players understand that we can get beat by a lot of teams, but we also know that we can beat a lot of people."
Kalin Lucas had 20 points and Raymar Morgan added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (20-4, 8-3), who have dropped two of their last three games.
"You just go through one million emotions in a game like tonight," said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. "I thought we were pretty good early. But we were just awful for about a five minute stint in the first. I got to give us some credit, because we could have just died but we came back and competed."
Trailing by 16 points to start the second half, the Spartans started the final 20 minutes with a 12-2 run and cut their deficit to 36-30 on a Goran Suton layup with 14:26 to play.
Purdue responded with consecutive layups, but Michigan State continued to pour it in and scored nine straight points to make it a 40-39 contest on Suton's layup with less than nine minutes remaining.
It remained tight over the next couple of minutes, but Purdue gave itself some breathing space on a Chris Kramer jumper followed with a three-pointer from Hummel to take a 56-50 lead with under two minutes to play.
Lucas put in a layup after a Michigan State timeout, but Hummel answered with a jumper and, after Drew Neitzel missed a three-pointer, Grant hit two free throws with 27 seconds to play to seal the win.
Trailing by a point with under 12 minutes to play in the half, Purdue scored 11 consecutive points capped on a three-pointer from Hummel for a 20-10 lead with less than eight minutes left in the first half.
The Boilermakers later had a 12-0 run to build on their lead and took a 34-18 advantage into the locker room.
