Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - B.J. Raymond drilled the go-ahead three- pointer with less than a minute to play, helping 13th-ranked Xavier pull out a 76-72 victory over Saint Joseph's at the Cintas Center.
Raymond finished with 11 points and Stanley Burrell led the way with 16 for Xavier (20-4, 8-1 Atlantic 10), which scored the last eight points of the game on the way to its sixth straight win. The Musketeers reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season.
Saint Joseph's (15-7, 6-3) could have tied Xavier for the conference lead with a victory, but instead dropped its second straight game on the heels of a six- game winning streak. The Hawks lost at Duquesne on Wednesday.
Rob Ferguson scored 18 points, hitting all four of his three-point tries, and Pat Calathes added 16 for Saint Joe's. Second-leading scorer Ahmad Nivins, who missed the Duquesne game because of a sprained right ankle, played 15 minutes and finished with nine points.
The Hawks appeared in position to pull off the upset, opening a 72-68 lead on a driving layup by Garrett Williamson with 2:15 remaining, but they wouldn't score again.
Burrell missed a three-point try for Xavier, but the Musketeers corralled the long rebound and Josh Duncan converted a three-point play with 1:26 left to make it a one-point game.
Calathes missed a jumper from the elbow at the other end and the Musketeers took the lead on a left-corner three-pointer by Raymond with 45.1 seconds to play.
The Hawks turned the ball over on their next possession and Burrell canned a pair from the stripe with 13.1 seconds left for the final margin, as Saint Joe's misfired on a couple of shots as time wound down.
"Years past, we probably would have folded," said Burrell about the team's ability to come back. "We probably would have quit. [It's] the three seniors. Our younger guys, they follow us."
Drew Lavender scored 12 points and Duncan chipped in 13 for the Musketeers, who shot 56.5 percent overall and connected on 12-of-20 from three-point range.
Saint Joe's trailed by nine at the break, but started the second half with a 14-2 run. A three-pointer by Calathes with just over 16 minutes left put the Hawks in front 46-43.
Lavender countered with a three at the other end, but Saint Joe's responded with the next seven points to open a 53-46 edge. The Musketeers, though, hung in and eventually tied it at 62-62 on a three-pointer by Duncan with 6:43 to play. Burrell then drilled another shot from beyond the arc to put Xavier in front, but the lead see-sawed back and forth until the closing minutes.
"Today was one of our best wins," said Xavier head coach Sean Miller. "There were so many different times in the second half when we could have just folded against a very good Saint Joseph's team. But we just didn't."
Xavier scored the game's first four points and opened a 9-4 edge on a three- pointer by Lavender, but Saint Joe's followed with a 10-2 burst and grabbed a 14-11 lead on a layup by Nivins with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening half.
The Hawks' lead reached four moments later on a three-pointer by Calathes, but Burrell answered with a trey on the ensuing trip to ignite a string of 10 straight Musketeer points. A dunk by Derrick Brown gave Xavier a 23-17 lead with 7 1/2 minutes to play before the break.
Raymond connected from beyond the arc with just over five minutes left to increase the lead to nine, and the cushion reached 14 on a triple by Adrion Graves before Xavier took a 41-32 advantage to the intermission.
The Musketeers drilled 7-of-13 three-point attempts and shot 57.1 percent overall in the first half.
"The thing that gets me about [Xavier], I think, is their defense and their ferocity," said Saint Joe's head coach Phil Martelli. "They're going to be a 2 or 3 seed [in the NCAA Tournament]."
