Jamaica, NY (Sports Network) - Larry Wright converted two free-throws with less than 20 seconds remaining to give the St.John's Red Storm a 64-62 win over the Providence Friars in Big East Conference action at Carnesecca Arena.
Wright finished the game with a team-high 16 points. Sean Evans added 12 points for the Red Storm (10-12, 4-7 Big East) which has now won three straight. Justin Burrell and Eugene Lawrence also chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Providence (13-10, 4-7) was paced by Jeff Xavier, who drilled five three- pointers on his way to a 19-point effort. Randall Hanke scored 16 points, while Geoff McDermott chipped in with eight points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
The Red Storm took control of the game in the first half, shooting 43.8 percent from the field to take a 32-27 lead at the break.
St. John's continued to shoot the ball well in the second stanza, knocking down 12-of-23 from the floor, to capture the two-point victory.
The Red Storm dominated Providence in the post, outscoring the Friars 34-22 in the paint.
