South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Luke Harangody drained four free throws in the final 25.7 seconds to help No. 22 Notre Dame stave off a furious Marquette rally and down the 16th-ranked Golden Eagles, 86-83, at the Joyce Center.
The venue is now home to 34 straight victories for the Fighting Irish, who received 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds from Tory Jackson. Kyle McAlarney scored 12 points and Luke Zeller added 11 for Notre Dame (17-4, 8-2 Big East), which streaked to their fifth consecutive win.
"We played smart. We did a good job not giving up the three-point shot on their last few possessions," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "Our fans certainly helped us."
Dominic James scored 23 points despite going nearly 17 minutes without a field goal and Lazar Hayward added to the offense both inside and outside with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (16-6, 6-5), who dropped their second straight conference contest.
With January's 92-66 defeat in Milwaukee a distant memory, the Fighting Irish built a double-digit lead in the second half before holding off the pesky Golden Eagles.
Harangody's free throws with 3:22 left gave Notre Dame an 80-70 lead, and James cut the deficit to eight with a pullup jumper almost one minute later. James scored off the break for an 80-74 game with 1:58 to go, and a loose ball scramble 40 ticks later led to Jerel McNeal's steal. He dished the ball off to David Cubillan, who calmly pulled up and buried a three for a three-point deficit with 1:12 on the clock.
The 9-0 run was capped by James' coast-to-coast layup with 31.6 seconds remaining. James then dove and stole the inbounds pass, but an attempted pass to a cutting Wesley Matthews went off the forward's hands and rolled toward Harangody near midcourt.
The Notre Dame forward was fouled and sank a pair of free throws with 25.7 seconds left. A pair of James' layups sandwiched a pair of free throws from Jonathan Peoples for 84-83 game with 11.5 seconds.
Harangody again stepped to the stripe and sank two free throws before James' last-second trey hit off the glass as time expired.
"He (James) was pressured so well," Marquette coach Tom Crean said. "At the same time, they did a good job on our action and Dominic James had a decision to make, whether to make the pass we needed to make or to put himself in position. I wouldn't have changed the set play we had. Give them credit -- they really defended well at the end."
Notre Dame used a significant free throw advantage and control of the backboards to hold a 46-36 lead at the half.
