Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Kyle Singler totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds and DeMarcus Nelson added 23 points and eight rebounds, as second-ranked Duke shook off its early post-North Carolina hangover to down pesky Boston College, 90-80, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Jon Scheyer added 11 points and Greg Paulus orchestrated the offense with eight points and five assists for the Blue Devils (21-1, 9-0 ACC), who looked sluggish early following an emotional 89-78 victory over North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Wednesday. Yet, the Blue Devils still won their 11th straight game and the did it by outhustling BC, forcing 21 turnovers and coming up with 19 offensive rebounds.
"For us to get 19 rebounds on the offensive end is huge," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We needed them because we missed so many free throws in the first half and we didn't finish at the bucket. We should have had about 55 points in the first half - but in saying that, we shouldn't give up 42."
Duke's 21-1 record through 22 games matches the best record in school history. Duke has now been 21-1 seven times, all under Krzyzewski and five times in the last 10 years.
Tyrese Rice kept Boston College (12-10, 3-6) in the game with 28 points on 10- of-16 shooting to go along with seven assists. Biko Paris scored 11 points and Shamari Spears totaled 10 points for the Eagles, who have dropped six in a row.
"Anytime you play, particularly on the road, and you're coming down the stretch you've got to make sure that you take care of the ball and get the shots that you want, and execute," BC coach Al Skinner said. "We didn't consistently do that, but again we all understand it's a work-in-progress. We just need to be tough enough and disciplined enough to do the things we have to do in order to be successful. That is something that this team is really trying to make an effort to do and learn."
Singler was the sharpshooter that put the game out of reach. He bookended a 17-2 spurt with treys, the first giving Duke the lead for good at 66-65 and the final dagger increasing the lead to 80-67.
The Blue Devils cruised to victory from there.
It didn't look so easy early, as Duke missed 11 of its first 14 shots from beyond the arc and converted on only 4-of-13 free throws at one point. Boston College, and more specifically Rice, took advantage and took a 38-30 lead on Paris' three-point play with about 4 1/2 minutes to go in the first half.
Lance Thomas' putback cut Duke's deficit to 42-41 at the half.
