NCAA Game Summary - Connecticut at Syracuse

Final Score: Connecticut 63 - Syracuse 61

Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Jeff Adrien scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as 19th-ranked Connecticut survived a last-minute blitz from Syracuse to win a 63-61 nail-biter at the Carrier Dome.

A.J. Price scored 14 points and doled out six assists for the Huskies (17-5, 7-3 Big East), who won their sixth consecutive game. Craig Austrie added 11 key points for Connecticut, while Hasheem Thabeet controlled the paint, scoring six points, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking seven shots.

"(Thabeet's) good, he's the best shot blocker in the country," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "We have to get to the basket. I just don't think we used good judgment. Arinze (Onuaku) went to the basket hard the whole game. I just don't think he was involved the whole game. We've got to attack it better."

Paul Harris scored 24 points and corralled 11 rebounds for Syracuse (16-8, 6-5), while Jonny Flynn added 20 points and six assists. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Orange, who got just eight points on 2-of-15 shooting from freshman standout Donte Greene.

After the teams traded the lead back-and-forth for the first 30 minutes, the Huskies finally began to assert themselves late in the second half, with floater by Austrie capping off a 9-0 run that gave the Huskies a nine-point lead with 4:59 left in regulation.

UConn and Syracuse then traded baskets, until Flynn stepped back and drained an NBA-range three-pointer that cut the lead to 59-53 with 2:19 remaining.

After Thabeet made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, Harris nailed a three that brought Syracuse within four with just over 90 seconds left.

Austrie hit a pair of free throws to bring the lead back to six, but Harris then took the ball the length of the court, driving in from a layup that made the score 62-58 with 57.1 seconds to go.

"Paul (Harris) and Jonny (Flynn) kept us in there, they played tremendous," Boeheim said. "Back-to-back, two games, they played tremendous -- better today than they were the other day. One turnover between the two of them, they just didn't get much help."

Greene then fouled Austrie, who made 1-of-2 at the line, but Syracuse responded when Harris drove into the lane and kicked the ball out to Flynn, who canned a three-pointer over Price to pull the Orange within two with 41.8 ticks left on the clock.

Austrie had a chance to ice the game with a three in the final 10 seconds, but his shot was off the mark, and the Orange forced a jump ball on the rebound, taking possession with 2.3 seconds left.

Flynn got off a desperation three as time expired, but the ball never reached the basket as the Huskies survived the last-ditch effort and held on for a thrilling win.

"I'm very disappointed in our offense," Boeheim said. "Until the second half, at the end there, we didn't slide up well. We had many good looks, but we took too many in-between shots."

The first half was nip-and-tuck throughout, with both teams holding the lead at several occasions in the half. After the Huskies led early, Greene hit a long three that put the Orange up, 16-14, just under eight minutes into the game.

Syracuse led by as many as five, but Adrien, who scored 10 points in the session, scored four straight points to pull Connecticut back ahead, 27-26, with just over five minutes left before intermission.

However, the Orange surged back to take a one-point lead in the final seconds, before Flynn stole an errant pass from Donnell Beverly and cruised down the court for a layup with two seconds left that sent the Orange to the locker room leading 34-31.

UConn pulled into the lead early in the second half, but the Orange never let the Huskies pull away, answering nearly every Connecticut basket with one of their own.

Price finally managed to put the Huskies up by four when his runner gave Connecticut a 50-46 lead with just over seven minutes left. Thabeet then made 1-of-2 at the free throw line, then put in a layup to give the Huskies a seven point lead, 53-46, with 5:54 left in regulation.
