Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Joe Reitz scored 17 points and collected 11 rebounds, leading the Western Michigan Broncos to an 86-66 triumph over the Akron Zips in Mid-American Conference action at University Arena.
Derek Drews added 14 points off the bench for WMU (13-9, 7-2 MAC), while David Kool netted 13 points and dished out a career-high eight assists. Shawntes Gary chipped in 11 points and six boards for the Broncos.
Chris McKnight posted a game-high 18 points off the bench to pace Akron (16-6, 6-3), while Nate Linhart scored 16 in the losing effort. Nick Dials added 11 points for the Zips.
The Broncos shot 53.6 percent from the floor during the first period, and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe to open up a 47-33 halftime lead.
The Zips were held to a mere 37.5-percent from the field during the second stanza, while the Broncos shot at a 54.2-percent clip en route to the 20-point victory.
Akron shot just 39.2 percent from the floor in the loss, and the Zips were out- rebounded by a 38-21 margin. WMU also held a 38-14 scoring edge inside the paint.
