Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Pete Campbell drained a three-pointer from the corner with 17 ticks on the clock, lifting 10th-ranked Butler over Valparaiso, 71-68, at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
The Bulldogs (20-2, 9-2 Horizon League) went ahead for the first time in the game with that shot, holding a 70-68 edge.
Just moments prior, Jarryd Loyd stuck a three-pointer from the top of the arc for a 68-65 Valparaiso lead. However, Mike Green countered with a quick left- handed layup, and Loyd missed badly on a free-throw attempt on the other end to give possession back to Butler.
Following Campbell's big shot, Willie Veasley came up with a steal, was fouled, and had a chance to seal the game at the line. He made just 1-of-2, though, giving the home squad a chance to tie.
Brandon McPherson had a decent look, but his shot hit the back of the iron in the closing seconds to secure the Bulldogs' fate.
A.J. Graves had a team-best 20 points and added eight rebounds while Campbell netted 17 for Butler, which has won four in a row.
Loyd scored 16 points and McPherson 14 for the Crusaders (14-8, 5-5), who fell to Loyola- Chicago, 65-63, their last time out.
Valpo raced out to a 12-0 lead to start the game, capped by Loyd's triple with 15:49 on the clock. Butler clawed back to tie it at 19-19, but the Crusaders reclaimed command by the end of the half and took a 43-35 lead into the locker room.
The score was tight for most of the second stanza, and stood knotted at 60-60 with just under three minutes to play following Graves' jumper.
