Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Edgar Sosa poured in 18 points as Louisville smothered 16th-ranked Marquette's offense from the opening tip en route to being the first visiting team this season to pick up a win at the Bradley Center, 71-57.
Jerry Smith added 12 points as Louisville (17-6, 7-3 Big East) won for the fourth time in five games. Earl Clark controlled the paint for the Cardinals, scoring 11 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots.
The Cardinals completed a season sweep of the Golden Eagles, as Louisville dominated the first matchup of the season, 71-51, at Freedom Hall on January 17.
Wesley Matthews scored 15 points to pace Marquette (16-5, 6-4), which had its three-game winning streak halted. Jerel McNeal pitched in 11 points as the only other Marquette player to reach double figures in a game where the Golden Eagles shot just 32 percent from the floor.
The Golden Eagles had been a perfect 12-0 at home this season entering the game.
Louisville opened the contest on 10-2 run, including a pair of threes from Sosa, as the Cardinals controlled the flow of the game on both ends of the court.
Marquette closed to within four, but Louisville's defensive pressure and hot shooting allowed the Cardinals to continue to pull ahead, with Clark's dunk putting Louisville up 19-10 just over six minutes into the game.
The teams traded baskets for most of the rest of the half, until Dominic James drained a three-pointer with 4:02 left to pull the Golden Eagles within six at 25-19.
However, Louisville scored the next seven points, capped off by a three from Sosa that gave the Cardinals a 13-point lead with just over 90 seconds to go before halftime. Matthews made three free throws to trim the Louisville lead to 10 in the final 30 seconds, but Sosa hit a runner at the buzzer, capping off a 14-point half and sending Louisville to the locker room up 34-22.
Marquette crept to within eight early in the second half when McNeal finished a fast break with a dunk that made the score 34-26, but Louisville immediately pushed the lead back to double figures and took a 13 point advantage when Preston Knowles hit a jumper with 12:06 left to give the Cardinals a 45-32 edge.
A three from Matthews pulled the Golden Eagles within 10 at 49-39, but the Cardinals never allowed their lead to fall into single digits. Louisville's three-point shooting pushed the Cardinals' lead to greater heights, as Andre McGee's trey with 6:42 left gave Louisville its largest advantage to that point, 58-41.
Louisville's relentless defense prevented a comeback, as the Cardinals led by as many as 23 points down the stretch on their way to a dominating victory.
