NCAA Game Summary - Wisconsin at Minnesota

Final Score: Wisconsin 63 - Minnesota 47

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Trevon Hughes scored 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting as 13th-ranked Wisconsin routed Minnesota, 63-47, at Williams Arena.

Marcus Landry and Brian Butch added 11 points apiece for the Badgers (18-3, 8-1 Big Ten), who have won 12 of their past 13 games.

"(Hughes) kept his composure and handled the ball well," UW head coach Bo Ryan said of his point guard. "He is much better now than earlier in the season. We knew he would be tested in conference play and he's done a good job."

Lawrence Westbrook had 11 points for the Golden Gophers (13-7, 3-5), who have lost four of their past five games. Damian Johnson finished with 10 points and five blocked shots, while Dan Coleman chipped in with nine points.

"We got beat in toughness categories," Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith said. "It came down to second shots, screens, going to the basket, all things we didn't do in the second half."

The Badgers jumped on Minnesota from the opening tip. Hughes' three with just under 16 minutes to go in the opening half game Wisconsin an early 12-4 edge.

After Spencer Tollackson made it a 14-8 game with a jumper for Minnesota, the Badgers responded with a 15-2 run to seize control. Butch fueled the flurry with a three and a layup before Jason Bohannon capped it with a three of his own to make it a 29-10 affair with just under nine minutes to go until intermission.

The Gophers finally got things going for a bit and ripped off an 11-2 burst. Westbrook's layup capped the run and drew Minnesota within 10 points, 31-21, with just over five minutes left in the half.

Wisconsin recovered and closed the half strongly. Joe Krabbenhoft finished the scoring in the frame with the Badgers holding a comfortable 39-23 cushion.

The Gophers had a tough time making any inroads in the second half. Wisconsin took its first 20-point lead of the game, 45-25, when Michael Flowers connected on a three with just under 18 minutes left in the contest.

Minnesota tried to make one last push and closed the deficit to 14 points, 54-40, when Westbrook drained at three with 5:25 on the clock.

But, Butch answered at the other end with a pair of free throws and Hughes followed that with a pair of his own to make it 59-40 with 3:48 remaining.

The Gophers never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
